Netflix Unveils First Look at Fire Lord Ozai for ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Season 3
Netflix’s live-action adaptation of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ has been gradually building towards the franchise’s most significant conflict, chronicling Aang’s evolution from a hesitant hero learning to bend water to a fully engaged warrior against the Fire Nation. This slow-burn narrative has been rewarding, especially with a Season 2 finale that left fans in shock.
The finale concluded on a particularly harrowing note, with Aang being struck by Azula’s lightning during a pivotal encounter, leaving his fate uncertain as Katara desperately attempted to revive him using the sacred Spirit Oasis water. Compounding the tension, the Earth Kingdom’s capital, Ba Sing Se, fell under Fire Nation control by the episode’s end, granting Fire Lord Ozai the strategic advantage he had long sought.
As fans eagerly await the next chapter, Netflix has provided a small but significant update. A new preview image for ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Season 3 has been released, featuring a notably displeased Fire Lord Ozai ahead of the series’ concluding season, which is slated for 2027.
Season 3 is anticipated to adapt Book Three: Fire, the final chapter of the original animated series, which follows Aang as he learns firebending to confront Ozai before Sozin’s Comet arrives, making the Fire Lord nearly invincible. As reported by GamesRadar, this storyline will also explore Zuko’s inner turmoil regarding his return to the Fire Nation after siding with Azula against Aang, Katara, and Iroh during the Season 2 climax.
Netflix has confirmed that Season 3 will mark the live-action series’ final chapter, aiming to “conclude the epic story as the four nations unite – Water, Earth, Fire, Air – to bring The Legend of Aang to its proper conclusion,” according to TVInsider. This framing indicates that the season will heavily focus on the franchise’s core themes of unity and balance as it wraps up Aang’s journey.
In addition to Ozai, earlier previews have hinted at other significant plot developments leading into the final season, including Team Avatar’s efforts to gain the Earth King’s support and Aang’s ongoing training with Toph, the earthbending master who is crucial in preparing him for his ultimate showdown with the Fire Nation.
While Netflix has yet to announce an official premiere date for Season 3, production details provide some context. Since Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed back-to-back and completed filming in late 2025, the final season is expected to premiere sometime in early to mid-2027, as per TVInsider.
The returning cast includes Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Zuko, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Iroh, Elizabeth Yu as Azula, and Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai. Season 2 previously garnered a 67% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting a five-point improvement over the show’s Season 1 reception, according to CBR.

With critical reception improving throughout the series, ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ seems well-positioned to conclude its live-action narrative on a strong note. The newly released image of Ozai, while brief, offers fans their first real look at the antagonist as the franchise gears up for what promises to be its most significant confrontation yet.
As 2027 draws nearer and more information emerges, excitement for the live-action adaptation’s final season continues to build.
