Tom Holland’s fourth appearance as the iconic wall-crawler has spent the summer achieving what few blockbusters can: breaking box office records and setting new ones in quick succession. Released in theaters on July 31, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has maintained a remarkable momentum, accumulating milestone after milestone as it heads toward becoming one of the highest-grossing films in franchise history.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, this sequel takes place four years after ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ with Peter Parker living in isolation after erasing himself from the memories of those he loves. This emotional risk has clearly resonated with audiences, as ticket sales have remained impressively steady even weeks into the film’s theatrical run.

Now, the numbers reflect the film’s hype in a significant way. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has surpassed $900 million at the domestic box office, making it only the second film in history to achieve this milestone and the fastest to do so, reaching the mark in just 36 days, compared to the 50 days it took 2015’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’.

On its fifth Thursday in theaters, the film grossed $1.6 million, representing a mere 41.9% decline from the previous week’s Thursday total. In contrast, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ earned $1.1 million at the same point in its run, with a steeper 40.3% drop, highlighting the strong legs ‘Spidey’ has maintained deep into its release.

By the end of that Thursday, ‘Brand New Day’ had achieved a running domestic total of $899.8 million, placing it $92 million ahead of where ‘Endgame’ was at the same point in its theatrical journey. This gap is even more striking considering ‘Brand New Day’ had only opened $3 million ahead of ‘Endgame’ initially.

Such staying power has transformed a strong opening into a true box office phenomenon. The film’s audience turnout has remained consistent, even as students return to school, a time typically known for slowing down movie attendance.

Audience reactions have also backed up these impressive numbers. ‘Brand New Day’ received an A grade from CinemaScore, placing it alongside ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ and ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ in the franchise rankings, just below the A+ scores of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.’

With $900 million now behind it, the focus has shifted to an even larger target. Industry estimates suggest ‘Brand New Day’ is on track for a final domestic total between $950 million and $960 million.

This range is significant because it could allow ‘Brand New Day’ to surpass ‘The Force Awakens,’ whose $936.6 million domestic total has held the record for the highest-grossing film in the U.S. for 11 years. No film has come close to challenging that record since the 2015 Star Wars release, making this run particularly noteworthy for box office observers.

This milestone caps off a journey that has included the largest domestic opening weekend ever, the highest-grossing first week in box office history, and a rapid climb past $2 billion globally. With ‘Resident Evil’ not debuting for another two weeks, ‘Brand New Day’ appears poised to maintain its top position at the box office for the foreseeable future.

Regardless of what unfolds in the coming weeks, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has already secured its place as one of the defining box office stories of the year.
