Star Wars enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting confirmation that Dave Filoni’s long-discussed crossover movie is finally progressing. Since Filoni took the stage at Star Wars Celebration in 2023 to announce his theatrical project, details about the film have been scarce, leaving fans in suspense about its status.

This lack of updates was understandable, considering the numerous projects Lucasfilm has been juggling, including ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ debuting in theaters earlier this year and the ongoing Disney+ series that expand the New Republic era. With so many elements in play across the franchise, Filoni’s film appeared to be patiently awaiting its turn.

Now, there’s a fresh indication of progress. A new description for Filoni’s untitled movie has emerged from the September issue of trade journal Production Weekly, revealing that the story will center on the New Republic and will wrap up the interconnected narratives established in ‘The Mandalorian,’ ‘The Book of Boba Fett,’ ‘Ahsoka,’ and other Disney+ series.

This aligns with Filoni’s previous statements about the project, which has always been positioned as the culmination of storylines developed from the Mandoverse shows, tying together years of interconnected plots that began in the early seasons of ‘The Mandalorian.’

Production Weekly’s listing wasn’t the only indication of movement; the same September issue also featured ‘Star Wars: New Jedi Order,’ the long-awaited sequel starring Daisy Ridley that has similarly faced years of development delays. This suggests that both films may finally be approaching active pre-production after a lengthy period of relative silence.

Given the deep connections this project has to nearly a decade of storytelling, the timing of this renewed momentum feels crucial. Filoni’s film is anticipated to draw heavily from plotlines in the animated Star Wars series, intertwining narratives from both the streaming and animated segments of the franchise.

What makes this update particularly noteworthy is Filoni’s increased influence over these decisions. He became co-president of Lucasfilm in January of this year, alongside Lynwen Brennan, stepping into this role after Kathleen Kennedy’s departure following over 14 years at the helm of the studio.

This new position grants Filoni the authority to guide both this film and the broader New Republic era storyline with a level of creative control he previously lacked when the project was first announced. Filoni has also mentioned that working on ‘Ahsoka’ Season 2 has helped clarify his vision for the film’s narrative, indicating that the two projects are developing in tandem rather than separately.

As for the film’s primary antagonist, all indications continue to point toward Grand Admiral Thrawn. Filoni has previously characterized Thrawn as the quintessential villain of this era of Star Wars storytelling, given the character’s increasing prominence across ‘Rebels,’ ‘The Mandalorian,’ and ‘Ahsoka.’

With Production Weekly now highlighting the project alongside ‘New Jedi Order,’ fans have genuine reasons to believe that both films could see real progress toward filming in the upcoming months. Neither project currently has a confirmed release date, and Lucasfilm has yet to officially comment on the new description or any production timeline.

Considering the multitude of interconnected storylines this film is expected to address, from Din Djarin’s journey to Ahsoka Tano’s ongoing quest for Thrawn, expectations are understandably high. Whether it can meet the years of anticipation remains to be seen, but for the first time in a long while, this segment of the Star Wars universe appears to be moving forward.
