Marvel Teases a Massive Twist: Black Cat May Join the X-Men
Marvel’s roster of mutants has experienced significant changes recently, especially following the dramatic conclusion of the utopian Krakoa era, which left the X-Men line seeking a new direction. With two ongoing X-Men titles and mixed reviews for recent crossover events, the mutant segment of the Marvel Universe feels notably unsettled compared to its previous golden age.
Amid this uncertainty, one of Spider-Man’s most iconic supporting characters is quietly building towards an unexpected development in her solo series. Felicia Hardy, known as Black Cat, has been embroiled in cosmic stakes in her ongoing ‘Black Cat’ comic, interacting with characters from the Fantastic Four to the Punisher.
This storyline is now taking a surprising turn. AIPT has exclusively revealed the cover and solicitation for December’s ‘Black Cat’ #17, which seems to confirm that Felicia is becoming a mutant and joining the X-Men, following a previous hint in November’s ‘Black Cat’ #16 during her encounter with Emma Frost.
The official solicitation for the issue emphasizes this reveal, describing it as Felicia’s second genesis as the newest X-Men member, framing her recent interaction with Emma Frost as the catalyst for this transformation. The issue is penned by G. Willow Wilson, with art by Andrés Genolet and a cover by Gleb Melnikov, continuing the creative team behind Felicia’s solo run.
This isn’t Felicia’s first encounter with X-Men storylines this year. AIPT previously reported in August that November’s ‘Black Cat’ #16 would feature several X-Men guest stars, including Emma Frost, kicking off a two-part arc titled “X-CON” that initially presented the mutant question as an open mystery rather than a confirmed transformation.
The earlier issue’s solicitation teased the reveal, questioning whether Felicia is secretly a mutant without providing a definitive answer. With ‘Black Cat’ #17 dropping the “X-CON” title and fully embracing the mutant narrative, it appears Marvel is moving beyond ambiguity into a genuine status quo shift for the character.
Longtime readers have noticed the timing of this reveal. Felicia has never been established as a mutant in her decades-long history, with her signature bad luck ability, a form of probability manipulation, traditionally linked to experimental technology and later retconned origins rather than any mutant gene.
Some fans and outlets have drawn parallels to Ms. Marvel’s own retroactive mutant reveal in recent years, suggesting Marvel may be employing a similar narrative device to integrate another popular character into the X-Men. This shift also coincides with ongoing speculation that Peter Parker could eventually be revealed as a mutant within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the timing.
Black Cat’s transformation could also pave the way for potential live-action implications, especially considering how ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ introduced Jean Grey into that franchise’s universe earlier this year. Whether Marvel Studios plans to adapt this comic book twist for the screen remains purely speculative at this point.
With ‘Black Cat’ #17 scheduled for release in December, fans won’t have to wait long to discover how Felicia’s mutant status unfolds on the page, or if the twist will be a lasting change rather than a temporary narrative device. Regardless, it marks one of the more surprising character shakeups Marvel has hinted at in recent memory.
