‘Game of Thrones’ Star Hafþór Björnsson Expresses Interest in Playing Kratos in ‘God of War’
Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson has established himself as one of the most formidable figures in entertainment, whether dominating strongman competitions or terrifying audiences as Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane on ‘Game of Thrones.’ His impressive size and commanding screen presence make him a natural choice for larger-than-life roles, and he seems to have his sights set on another.
Prime Video’s highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the beloved ‘God of War’ video game series has been generating buzz for months with its casting announcements. As the show progresses in assembling its cast, one particular role has caught Björnsson’s attention in a very public manner.
Björnsson recently took to social media to share an AI-generated image of himself as Kratos, the franchise’s iconic hero, directly asking fans if they would like to see him take on the role. He captioned the post, inviting fans to share their honest opinions about his potential portrayal of Kratos, sharing the image on his official account.

The image showcases Björnsson looking remarkably similar to the character, complete with Kratos’ signature red tattoos and Spartan-inspired attire. This convincing digital transformation resonated with fans, although there is a significant complication regarding the role.
The complication is straightforward: Kratos has already been cast. Prime Video confirmed earlier this year that Ryan Hurst, known for his role in ‘Sons of Anarchy,’ will portray Kratos in the two-season adaptation. This casting decision has received largely positive feedback from fans and even garnered praise from Christopher Judge, the actor who has voiced Kratos in the games since 2018.
Judge specifically endorsed Hurst’s casting, expressing that he hoped whoever played Kratos would love, cherish, and respect the character as much as longtime fans do, and he believes Hurst fits that description perfectly. He praised Hurst as a talented actor and a genuine fan of the franchise who has played the games since their inception.
The show’s cast continues to expand around Hurst, with Ólafur Darri Ólafsson cast as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Max Parker as Heimdall, and Teresa Palmer as Sif. Under the guidance of showrunner Ronald D. Moore, known for ‘Outlander’ and ‘For All Mankind,’ the series will follow Kratos and his young son as they embark on a journey to scatter the ashes of his late wife and the boy’s mother.
Given that the casting is already finalized, Björnsson’s post appears to be more of a fun wishful thinking than a serious indication of any role change. There has been no indication from Amazon or the production that Hurst’s casting is in jeopardy, making Björnsson’s suggestion a playful hypothetical rather than a serious campaign.
Nonetheless, the strongman-turned-actor’s physical presence makes it easy to understand why fans might entertain the idea, even as a fun thought experiment. Standing tall and known for his powerlifting background, Björnsson certainly has the physique to convincingly portray the character, even if the timing simply doesn’t align.
For now, ‘God of War’ fans will have to imagine what a Björnsson version of Kratos might have looked like, while the actual production moves forward with Hurst already deep into preparing for the role. Whether Björnsson’s playful pitch leads to any future opportunity within the franchise remains to be seen.
