Paul Bettany Reveals What Happened When Jac Schaeffer Left ‘VisionQuest’
Marvel’s television trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ has always felt like a cohesive creative vision, shaped by the unique sensibility Jac Schaeffer brought to Vision and Wanda’s narrative from the outset. So when it was announced that Schaeffer would not be returning to conclude the trilogy she initiated, it raised significant questions about the events that transpired behind the scenes.
The trilogy was originally intended to culminate with Schaeffer completing the arc she had developed across ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Agatha All Along’, infusing her distinctive voice into Vision’s final chapter. Instead, ‘Star Trek: Picard’ veteran Terry Matalas stepped in to take over showrunning responsibilities, a transition that occurred swiftly enough to catch even Paul Bettany off guard.
Now, Bettany has shared insights into how that handoff occurred and how personally jarring the timing was for him. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bettany attributed Schaeffer’s departure to personal reasons, describing the sudden shift as something that genuinely destabilized him emotionally at the time.
“I felt like the rug had been pulled from under my feet,” Bettany told the outlet, reflecting on the moment he learned that Schaeffer would not be completing the story she had crafted with him from the beginning. “I love her very much, and we made a lovely thing together. I had been waiting and looking forward to having my turn with Jac,” he added, emphasizing how much he had anticipated collaborating with her on this concluding chapter.
That emotional upheaval, Bettany explained, happened almost instantaneously. “And then 24 hours later, I was at a lunch with Terry, because that’s the speed at which Marvel moves,” he said, illustrating the rapid pace at which the studio shifted from one creative vision to another.
Schaeffer herself has previously addressed the decision, framing it as a scheduling conflict rather than any deeper disagreement. She explained that ‘Agatha All Along’ and ‘VisionQuest’ ended up overlapping in a way that simply wasn’t feasible for her, describing the decision as made “with a very heavy heart” while underscoring her continued enthusiasm for the project moving forward without her.
Despite the abrupt transition, Bettany has made it clear that he quickly embraced Matalas’s vision for the series. According to Bettany, Matalas’s pitch focused on exploring what he termed “intergenerational digital trauma,” a thematic angle that immediately resonated with the actor. Bettany says he was fully convinced once Matalas proposed bringing James Spader back as Ultron, a casting choice that has since become one of the show’s major selling points.
Schaeffer hasn’t completely stepped away from the project either. She remains credited as an executive producer on ‘VisionQuest’, alongside Matalas, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, and Mary Livanos, indicating that her creative influence is still present even without her serving as showrunner.
The series continues the narrative of White Vision, who regained his memories at the end of ‘WandaVision’ and has spent the years since grappling with his fractured identity. With Matalas now at the helm, ‘VisionQuest’ is set to conclude the trilogy Schaeffer began, even if the path to reach this point wasn’t as smooth as fans might have anticipated.
For Bettany, the experience seems to have ultimately deepened his appreciation for both collaborators, even as he has been open about how disorienting the sudden transition felt in real time. ‘VisionQuest’ premieres on Disney+ on October 14.
