Marvel Studios has always recognized the impact of spectacle, and nothing exemplifies that better than witnessing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes unite one last time. As excitement builds for the studio’s next major crossover event, the marketing strategy has taken an intriguing turn by reflecting on the past rather than looking ahead.

This nostalgic focus is on ‘Avengers: Endgame’, the franchise’s record-breaking 2019 conclusion to the Infinity Saga, which is set to return to theaters under a new title. Ahead of its re-release, Marvel has unveiled stunning new artwork showcasing the film’s extensive ensemble cast reunited in a single sweeping image, providing fans with a fresh visual reminder of the multitude of characters involved in that epic final battle.

The re-release, officially named ‘Avengers Endgame: Encore’, kicks off on September 25 and serves as both a nostalgic celebration and a strategic lead-up to December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Marvel has indicated that the presentation will feature an exclusive first look at ‘Doomsday’, which will only be shown during the Encore screenings, offering fans a compelling reason to revisit theaters beyond mere nostalgia.

This exclusive footage will be available in standard theaters, IMAX, and a new premium format called Infinity Vision, Disney’s latest certification for large-format screens that promises bigger images, brighter visuals, and enhanced sound quality. Viewers attending the Encore presentation in either IMAX or Infinity Vision-certified theaters will have access to the additional ‘Doomsday’ sneak peek, which won’t be available in regular showings.

In addition to the promotional tie-in, the re-release will include genuine new content within the film. Listings suggest the Encore runtime will be approximately 185 minutes, making it about four minutes longer than the original 2019 theatrical cut, thus reportedly becoming the longest Marvel Studios theatrical release to date. This extra runtime is expected to feature a new custom introduction, additional footage, and a special end tag exclusive to the Encore presentation.

The excitement surrounding the re-release has already shown to be remarkably strong. Reports indicate that the Encore trailer garnered over 77 million views within its first 24 hours, more than four times the opening reception of any previous theatrical re-release trailer, surpassing similar campaigns for films like ‘Top Gun’, the original ‘Avatar’, and ‘Titanic’.

Much of this enthusiasm likely stems from ‘Endgame’s’ extraordinary legacy. The film originally shattered box office records upon its release, achieving the biggest opening weekend of all time and ultimately grossing nearly $2.8 billion worldwide, making it not only the culmination of the Infinity Saga but also one of the last major pre-pandemic theatrical blockbusters.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who also return to direct both ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and its sequel ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, ‘Endgame’ has remained a pivotal moment for the franchise, particularly cherished for communal theatrical experiences like the film’s iconic portal sequence that became a viral sensation. Reviving that collective excitement in theaters seems to be the primary goal behind this Encore campaign.

With Infinity Vision expanding to approximately 75 certified theaters in the U.S. and 300 internationally as of earlier this year, Disney clearly views this re-release as more than just a nostalgia trip, positioning it as a proof of concept for its broader premium theatrical ambitions as the fall movie season approaches.
