Stephen King adaptations have become a significant trend in recent years, and few filmmakers have garnered the trust of both King and horror enthusiasts like Mike Flanagan. After successfully tackling ‘Doctor Sleep’ and establishing a unique style characterized by slow-burn tension in series such as ‘Midnight Mass’ and ‘The Haunting of Hill House,’ Flanagan is now focusing on King’s very first published novel.

That novel is ‘Carrie,’ the 1974 debut that launched King’s illustrious career, with over 350,000,000 copies sold globally. While the story has seen multiple film adaptations, including Brian De Palma’s Oscar-nominated 1976 classic, it has never before been adapted into a television series—until now.

A chilling new trailer for Flanagan’s ‘Carrie’ has just been released, showcasing themes of teenage rage, bullying, and the gradual buildup to the infamous prom night. This full-length trailer follows an earlier teaser released in July, providing fans with their most comprehensive look yet at Flanagan’s vision for expanding King’s original narrative for the small screen.

‘Carrie’ will premiere with all eight episodes available simultaneously on Prime Video on October 7, reaching audiences in over 240 countries and territories worldwide. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Intrepid Pictures, with King himself serving as an executive producer alongside Flanagan and longtime collaborator Trevor Macy.

The series centers on Carrie White, a misfit high schooler who has spent much of her life isolated under the strict, protective gaze of her mother, Margaret. Following her father’s unexpected death, Carrie is thrust into the harsh reality of public high school, where she must navigate a viral bullying scandal, the pressures of social media, and the emergence of mysterious telekinetic powers that intensify as she matures.

Flanagan has emphasized that this adaptation is not intended to compete with De Palma’s iconic film. During the show’s Comic-Con panel, he told Deadline that ‘Carrie’ was written fifty years ago and adapted brilliantly by De Palma, describing that version as iconic and deserving of respect. Instead, Flanagan views his take as a backward journey, drawing from his own experiences in public school to explore how he might have reacted in Carrie’s situation.

Leading the series as Carrie White is Summer H. Howell, who was chosen from over 1,000 actors who auditioned for the role. Samantha Sloyan plays her mother, Margaret, and the two share a history, as Sloyan has appeared in several of Flanagan’s previous projects, including ‘The Haunting of Hill House,’ ‘Midnight Mass,’ and ‘The Fall of the House of Usher.’

The supporting cast includes Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Totah as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle. Additional cast members include Michael Trucco, Crystal Balint, Rahul Kohli, Tim Bagley, and Heather Graham, along with Kate Siegel, who will take on a yet-to-be-revealed role.

Flanagan directs episodes one, two, seven, and eight, while the remaining episodes are helmed by Kate Siegel, Axelle Carolyn, Kyra Sedgwick, and Hiromi Kamata. Michael Fimognari serves as the cinematographer, with The Newton Brothers composing the score, both of whom are frequent collaborators with Flanagan.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of De Palma’s original film adaptation, adding an extra layer of significance to the timing of Flanagan’s reimagining. With a talented cast and a creative team built around Flanagan’s trusted collaborators, ‘Carrie’ is poised to be one of the most anticipated horror releases this fall.
