Noel Clarke’s career has been overshadowed by serious allegations for the past five years, following a wave of sexual misconduct claims that emerged in 2021. What started as an investigation by The Guardian into his behavior has now escalated into formal legal proceedings, marking a significant development in a case that has haunted the actor for years.

Clarke, who gained fame for portraying Mickey Smith alongside Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler on ‘Doctor Who’ from 2005 to 2010, was arrested in September 2025 after a search of his home by London’s Metropolitan Police. Although the specific reasons for his arrest were not disclosed at the time, it followed a year-long inquiry by the police’s central specialist crime command.

This investigation has now led to formal criminal charges. The Crown Prosecution Service has authorized the Metropolitan Police to charge the 50-year-old actor with two counts of sexual assault, three counts of voyeurism, and one count of exposure, stemming from alleged incidents that occurred between 2007 and 2016 involving five women.

According to the Met Police, voyeurism involves secretly observing, photographing, or filming another person without their consent for sexual gratification, which is among the specific offenses now formally charged against Clarke. The charges cover a nine-year period and were brought forward after detectives compiled sufficient evidence for the CPS to proceed with the case.

Bethan David, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London, explained that the decision to pursue prosecution was made after a thorough investigation in collaboration with the Metropolitan Police, determining there was enough evidence and public interest to bring the case to court.

Detective Superintendent Mike Cagney, who has been leading the investigation, highlighted that the women involved are receiving ongoing support from specially trained officers throughout the legal process. He also encouraged any additional victims of sexual assault to come forward, assuring that their information would be treated with sensitivity by trained specialists.

Clarke is set to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on October 21, marking the beginning of the formal legal proceedings. As with any criminal charge, the allegations are unproven at this stage, and Clarke has not yet been convicted of any crime.

These charges come amid a broader pattern of public accusations against Clarke. In 2021, The Guardian published an investigation featuring claims from over 20 women accusing him of groping, sexual misconduct, and bullying, including allegations that some incidents occurred on the set of ‘Doctor Who’.

This reporting resulted in serious professional repercussions, including BAFTA suspending his membership and revoking a previously awarded honor. Clarke later filed a libel suit against The Guardian but lost the case in 2025, with a U.K. High Court judge ruling that the publication’s reporting was substantially true and in the public interest, deeming Clarke not a credible witness during the proceedings.

With formal charges now filed and a court date approaching, Clarke’s case enters a new and critical phase after years of allegations primarily confined to civil proceedings and media scrutiny. The outcome of this criminal case could have significant ramifications not only for Clarke but also for the industry’s ongoing struggle with misconduct allegations that first came to light years ago.
