Sony CEO Reveals Surprise Over ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Box Office Success
Superhero films have faced a barrage of think-pieces in recent years, questioning whether the genre has lost its appeal. With ticket sales for many franchise entries cooling and audiences becoming more selective, studios have been challenged to justify their big-budget comic book spectacles.
In this context, Sony and Marvel’s latest Spider-Man film debuted this summer with high expectations, thanks to Tom Holland’s impressive track record and the character’s lasting popularity. However, few anticipated just how far the film would exceed those expectations.
Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and CEO Ravi Ahuja has confirmed that even the studio itself was caught off guard by the film’s remarkable success. Speaking at the BofA Securities 2026 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference in New York, Ahuja told Variety that the box office performance was a genuine surprise, admitting they hadn’t anticipated such strong results despite expecting the movie to do exceptionally well.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has now surpassed $2,400,000,000 at the global box office, securing its place among the highest-grossing theatrical releases of all time. The film achieved the $2,000,000,000 milestone in just three weekends, making it the second-fastest film in history to reach that figure, following ‘Avengers: Endgame.’
Domestically, the film has grossed over $917,800,000, with international markets significantly contributing to its total, particularly China at $230,800,000 and the UK at $130,000,000. Additionally, it has maintained the number one spot at the box office for six consecutive weekends, a feat matched by only one other film this decade.

Ahuja highlighted the film’s emotional core as a key factor that distinguishes it from other recent superhero films. He noted that while ‘Brand New Day’ is packed with action and fun, its emotional depth has truly resonated with audiences, with some viewers reportedly moved to tears after screenings.
This emotional resonance has been reflected in the film’s coverage, which describes it as a character-driven narrative focusing on themes of friendship, loneliness, and connection, rather than merely delivering spectacle. Director Destin Daniel Cretton’s approach seems to have tapped into what audiences have been longing for beyond typical franchise offerings.
The film’s total now places it among cinematic giants like ‘Avatar,’ ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ ‘Titanic,’ ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ all of which have crossed the $2,000,000,000 mark globally. Notably, the previous Holland-led film, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ came close with $1,900,000,000 but fell short, partly due to not being released in China.
‘Brand New Day’ has avoided that limitation, with strong performances across various international markets fueling its momentum well beyond its opening weekend.
With such impressive numbers, Ahuja’s comments indicate that Sony is still coming to terms with the significance of this film for the studio’s future strategy. Given his earlier remarks about the necessity of emotional substance and cultural relevance in superhero films today, ‘Brand New Day’ seems to validate that philosophy in a very tangible way.
As the film continues its historic run, its performance is likely to influence how Sony approaches future Spider-Man projects, while fans eagerly await news on when Holland might return for another solo adventure.
