Josh Hartnett has been quietly revitalizing his career with a series of genre-savvy roles, ranging from prestige dramas to horror-infused thrillers that highlight his everyman charm. His latest endeavor dives into creature-feature territory, and the newly released poster art has given fans an exciting glimpse of what’s to come.

This project is ‘Below,’ a six-episode limited series set in a close-knit fishing community in Newfoundland, Canada, where a mysterious sea creature begins to terrorize the town. Hartnett plays Calvin Penney, a big-hearted yet stubborn fisherman haunted by his father’s mysterious death from years ago. Now, he must protect his family and community from the threat emerging from the ocean depths.

Ahead of its world premiere at TIFF’s Primetime program on September 10, the show’s first official poster has arrived, hinting at the eerie, iceberg-laden visuals that characterize its Newfoundland backdrop. Netflix has confirmed that the series will officially debut on the platform on October 8, providing audiences with a brief window between its festival debut and its broader streaming release.

Calvin’s battle against the creature is closely linked to his relationships with his children, each of whom has taken a different path in life. His son Wade, portrayed by ‘Stranger Things’ star Charlie Heaton, is still searching for direction, while his other children navigate their own complicated returns to a hometown already on edge.

To confront the lurking threat, Calvin teams up with a visiting marine researcher named Fonda Howander, played by Mackenzie Davis. Together, they work to uncover buried secrets tied to the island’s history before it’s too late. The series blends local myth, suspense, and heartfelt humor while exploring themes of family, community, and inevitable change, according to the show’s official description.

The cast also includes Ruby Stokes, Kaleb Horn, Rohan Campbell, and Willow Kean, creating a robust ensemble that enhances the small-town dynamics alongside the central creature threat. This combination of rising talent and established genre veterans suggests that ‘Below’ aims for a more character-driven narrative than a typical monster thriller.

The series is created, produced, and showrun by Jesse McKeown, known for his previous work on ‘The Umbrella Academy.’ Hartnett also serves as an executive producer, alongside Jessica Rhoades through her company Pacesetter, Chris Hatcher, Jamie Childs, Louise Sutton, and Sharon Hall.

To authentically capture the atmosphere of a remote Newfoundland fishing village, the production filmed entirely on location in St. John’s, Newfoundland, avoiding studio sets or substitute locations. This commitment to authenticity extends to the show’s visual identity, with early marketing materials emphasizing the region’s iceberg-dotted coastline and moody, overcast tone.

Given how intricately the plot intertwines local mythology with traditional horror elements of a lurking sea creature, this grounded setting seems central to how the series distinguishes itself from other recent monster-focused streaming projects.

With Hartnett taking on both a starring and producing role, and McKeown bringing his genre sensibilities from his ‘Umbrella Academy’ background, ‘Below’ appears poised to be one of Netflix’s more atmospheric offerings this fall. Its TIFF premiere will provide an early glimpse of critical reception before the show reaches a wider audience just weeks later.
