Keanu Reeves Secures New Action Franchise with ‘Kill Current’ Adaptation
Keanu Reeves has dedicated nearly twenty years to establishing himself as one of cinema’s most dependable action heroes, with the ‘John Wick’ franchise alone raking in hundreds of millions across four films. As fans eagerly await news on the next installment in that universe, Reeves has been quietly expanding his portfolio with a diverse array of projects, including animation, science fiction, and now an entirely new literary universe.
This expanding slate features several high-profile endeavors, from voicing the lead in Masashi Kawamura’s stop-motion thriller ‘Hidari’ to filming Tim Miller’s upcoming sci-fi project ‘Shiver’ and reprising his role as Shadow in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4.’ Amidst all this activity, Reeves has just secured what could be his most significant new venture yet.
The Arena has preemptively acquired the rights to adapt Oliver Lowe’s forthcoming novel ‘Kill Current: A Jon Hendricks Thriller,’ with Reeves set to star as the titular character, a weary CIA officer drawn back into action to avenge the protégé he once trained and lost.
‘Kill Current’ is the first installment in a planned thriller series focused on Jon Hendricks, with the novel itself not scheduled for release until Zando publishes it in May 2027. This timeline indicates that the film adaptation is advancing well ahead of the source material’s actual debut, reflecting the confidence of all parties involved in the project’s potential.
According to its official logline, the narrative unfolds as a globe-trotting, high-stakes action thriller that revolves around shifting alliances and a race for the world’s most valuable assets, integrating contemporary issues such as semiconductors, global supply chains, and technological warfare into its core plot.
In addition to starring in the film, Reeves is producing the project alongside Alexandra Grant through Two Dragonflies, a newly established production banner the two founded to develop stories across film, television, animation, comics, games, and literature. ‘Kill Current’ marks the inaugural project to emerge from this new company.
Reeves expressed genuine enthusiasm about the opportunity in comments shared with Deadline, stating he’s thankful for the chance to develop the character alongside his collaborators and that this project signifies the launch of Two Dragonflies, the company he shares with Grant. This framing indicates that Reeves views ‘Kill Current’ as more than just another acting role, positioning it as the foundation for a broader creative venture moving forward.
The film is being financed and produced by The Arena, the independent studio founded by former Lionsgate film chief Erik Feig, with Zando founder and CEO Molly Stern serving as an executive producer alongside her publishing company. Stern has characterized Lowe’s story as a modern reinvention of the geopolitical thriller genre, crafted around the global tensions and technological anxieties that define our current era.
This combination of talent, a major independent studio, a rising literary voice in Lowe, and one of action cinema’s most bankable stars suggests that Reeves and his collaborators are aiming to create something with substantial franchise potential from the ground up, rather than merely adapting an already established property.
With ‘Kill Current’ now added to an already busy lineup of upcoming projects, Reeves shows no signs of slowing down as he continues to diversify beyond the realm of ‘John Wick.’ Whether Jon Hendricks will become his next iconic on-screen character remains to be seen, but the ambition behind this new venture is already evident.
