Marvel’s journey to ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has been anything but dull this year. With a record-breaking trailer launch and a relentless marketing campaign, the studio has been building excitement for what is poised to be one of the year’s most significant theatrical releases.

This excitement has been partly fueled by the blockbuster success of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which has grossed over $2.4 billion globally since its late July release. This week, it is anticipated to surpass ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ as the highest-grossing film in U.S. box office history, not adjusted for inflation.

In this context, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has reached an impressive milestone of its own. The film has officially surpassed $50 million in domestic box office presales, a figure revealed by Disney Senior EVP and Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference, a full three months ahead of its December 18 release.

Equally noteworthy is how audiences are choosing to experience the film. Over 70 percent of advance ticket sales are for the premium Infinity Vision format, indicating that fans are not only eager to see ‘Doomsday’ early but also want the most immersive viewing experience possible.

This premium interest comes at a crucial time, as ‘Doomsday’ will compete for large-format screens with ‘Dune: Part Three’ during the same holiday window. Denis Villeneuve’s film has already secured IMAX screens for its opening weekend. The strong presales for Infinity Vision suggest that theaters are prioritizing ‘Doomsday’ where it matters most.

This surge in presales is not happening in isolation. The film’s July trailer became the second-largest movie trailer launch ever and is now Disney’s most-viewed trailer in history, a record that has evidently translated into significant ticket-buying momentum months before the film’s release.

Marvel’s marketing team has effectively harnessed spectacle to keep fans engaged. A cast-reveal livestream that showcased the Doomsday lineup through names displayed on the backs of set chairs garnered 275 million digital views and 3.1 million social media mentions.

This promotional enthusiasm has also spilled into nostalgia plays within the MCU calendar. ‘Avengers: Endgame: Encore,’ an extended rerelease of the original 2019 film, is set to return to theaters on September 25, and its trailer alone amassed 77 million views within the first 24 hours, more than quadrupling the view count of any previous rerelease trailer.

The cumulative impact of these activities is also evident on the streaming front. Disney reported that Marvel Studios titles accumulated over 420 million hours of viewing on Disney+ in August, marking the highest monthly total the studio has ever recorded on the platform, with anticipation for Doomsday credited for over 200 million of those hours.

Together, the presale figures, trailer records, and streaming surge all point toward a strong resurgence for the franchise. After a period of mixed box office results and lukewarm fan reception, the buzz surrounding ‘Doomsday’ indicates that Marvel is regaining significant momentum as it heads into its next chapter.

More Marvel content is also on the horizon to maintain this momentum before ‘Doomsday’ hits theaters. ‘VisionQuest’ is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on October 14, providing fans with another reason to stay engaged with the MCU as the countdown to December continues.
