Marvel fans have plenty to celebrate this year, and the excitement shows no signs of waning. With a record-breaking summer at the box office and an unprecedented marketing campaign, the buzz surrounding the Marvel Cinematic Universe is at an all-time high as we head into fall.

Much of this enthusiasm has been fueled by two key projects. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has taken theaters by storm since its late July release, while the promotional efforts for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ have kept fans eagerly engaged ahead of its December launch.

This combined energy has resulted in a remarkable streaming achievement. Disney has reported that Marvel Studios titles amassed over 420 million hours of viewing on Disney+ in August, marking the highest monthly total the studio has ever recorded on the platform.

This figure represents a significant increase over typical viewing levels, with the anticipation for Doomsday alone credited for driving more than 200 million of those hours above the norm. It serves as a powerful reminder that excitement for a film yet to be released can lead fans to revisit the streaming catalog to relive past favorites.

The milestone was revealed by Disney Senior EVP and Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston during the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference. Johnston directly linked the surge to the dual impact of Doomsday’s marketing strategy and the phenomenal success of ‘Brand New Day,’ which has now surpassed $2.4 billion globally, making it the third-highest-grossing film of all time before inflation adjustments.

The box office success is expected to continue. This week, ‘Brand New Day’ is projected to surpass ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ to become the highest-grossing film in U.S. box office history before inflation, setting the stage for a showdown with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ for that title once it premieres.

Doomsday’s promotional efforts have already set records of their own. Its July trailer has become the second-biggest movie trailer launch ever and is now Disney’s most-viewed trailer in history, which helps explain the influx of fans returning to older Marvel titles on Disney+.

According to Deadline, this promotional momentum goes beyond just the trailer. Marvel’s cast-reveal livestream, which showcased the Doomsday lineup through names displayed on the backs of set chairs, garnered 275 million digital views and 3.1 million social media mentions.

Nostalgia is also playing a role in these impressive numbers. ‘Avengers: Endgame: Encore,’ an extended rerelease of the 2019 blockbuster, is set to return to theaters on September 25, and its trailer achieved 77 million views within the first 24 hours, more than quadrupling the view count of any previous rerelease trailer.

Ticket demand for Doomsday is already exceeding expectations. Presales have surpassed $50 million domestically a full three months before the film’s December 18 release, with over 70 percent of ticket sales going to Infinity Vision screenings.

Fans are noticing the dramatic shift in the franchise’s fortunes. After several years of mixed box office results and a cooler reception following the original ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ the positive response to both ‘Brand New Day’ and the ‘Doomsday’ marketing suggests a genuine revival of interest in the MCU as a whole.

More Marvel content is on the horizon to maintain this momentum. ‘VisionQuest’ is set to debut on Disney+ on October 14, providing fans with another reason to stay engaged with the platform ahead of Doomsday’s theatrical release, with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ already scheduled for December 2027.
