Marvel Studios has dedicated much of this year to crafting an unparalleled promotional strategy for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ and its latest initiative may be its boldest yet. Instead of directly promoting the new film, the studio is inviting fans to revisit one of its most legendary entries first.

This is precisely what is happening with ‘Avengers: Endgame: Encore,’ a theatrical re-release of the Russo brothers’ 2019 blockbuster, which is set to hit theaters on September 25. Marvel has just unveiled a new trailer for the rerelease, showcasing some of the film’s most memorable moments from its climactic final battle as the countdown to December continues.

What elevates this rerelease beyond mere nostalgia is the addition of new content. The Encore version features approximately four minutes of fresh footage that was not included in the original 2019 cut, along with an exclusive sneak peek at ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ attached to every screening.

Fans watching in IMAX or on Disney’s new Infinity Vision-certified screens will receive an extra bonus, as those formats will include a second sneak peek at ‘Doomsday’ that standard theaters will not show. This is part of a marketing strategy Marvel has embraced throughout the ‘Doomsday’ rollout, having previously utilized exclusive theater-only content linked to teasers for ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ earlier in the campaign.

The earlier trailer for the rerelease highlighted spoiler-heavy moments that could not be shown prior to the film’s original 2019 release, including the full portal sequence, Steve Rogers wielding Mjolnir against Thanos, and Tony Stark’s final sacrifice. It serves as a reminder of the lasting impact ‘Endgame’ has had on audiences seven years later, especially as Marvel prepares to conclude this next chapter of the saga.

In addition to the new footage, observant fans have also spotted subtle alterations to the film itself. Side-by-side comparisons between the Encore trailer and the existing Disney+ version reveal noticeable differences in color grading, with Thanos and his army appearing more vibrant and saturated compared to the washed-out tones that many critics previously criticized in the Russos’ visual style.

This adjustment addresses a long-standing critique of the Russo brothers’ Marvel films, as critics have often described ‘Endgame’s’ color palette as flat and overly reliant on muted browns and grays, particularly during the climactic battle once the portal effects faded. The brighter, more comic-accurate grading offers longtime fans a genuinely fresh way to experience a film they have likely seen numerous times.

However, not everyone is convinced that the new footage will integrate seamlessly. Some fans online have speculated that the additional four minutes could merely consist of a bonus scene added to the credits rather than being woven into the main narrative, a theory that has sparked considerable debate about how Marvel intends to incorporate new content into a film that audiences already know by heart.

Regardless of its structure, the timing clearly indicates what Marvel is building toward. ‘Endgame’ originally grossed around $2.8 billion globally, making it the second-highest-grossing film in history, and this rerelease fits neatly between ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which is set to premiere in theaters on December 18.

For a studio that has spent much of the year generating excitement through trailers, presales, and record-breaking Disney+ viewership numbers, sending fans back to the moment that defined the Infinity Saga feels like the perfect transition into its next chapter.
