‘Average Joe‘ has earned its reputation by blending intense, small-scale action with genuine emotion, and this balance becomes even more intricate as Season 2 approaches its conclusion. Joe, Leon, and Touch have been on a quest through Africa, following Teddy’s old clues while confronting both past traumas and new threats.

The fifth episode picks up right after the previous hour’s cliffhanger, leaving Imani in a perilous situation. Instead of fast-forwarding to find her already in Sipho’s grasp, the episode begins at the same moment, with Joe determined not to let his sister slip away without a fight.

What ensues is a frantic dash through the streets as Joe races to save Imani, who is bravely battling her captors. This chaotic, bloody, and unexpectedly humorous action sequence is a hallmark of the show, though this time, the momentum wanes as the chase turns out to be the only significant action of the hour.

Rather than escalating the gunfights, the episode takes a step back to explore its characters, starting with the main antagonist. A flashback reveals that Sipho wasn’t always the cold-blooded crime lord terrorizing Joe’s crew; he was once a young boy who witnessed his mother’s murder in church. Forced to take on the mantle of his captor, he eventually killed him and became the man now pursuing Joe and his friends.

This introspective approach also applies to Phyllis and Touch, whose bond has been developing throughout the season. The episode reveals why Phyllis refuses to abandon Touch despite his self-destructive behavior, sharing that she lost her sister and has dedicated herself to healing others whom society has given up on.

This backstory culminates in one of the episode’s most touching moments, where a spiritual vision of Phyllis’s late sister Donna conveys that the truth will liberate Touch. Shortly thereafter, Touch finally opens up to Joe and Leon about his secrets, and instead of distancing themselves, the two men embrace him, creating one of the series’ most heartfelt scenes.

However, the warmth is short-lived when Cathy reappears. After spending the episode’s beginning apologizing for her past betrayals, she again undermines the group by alerting the police about the dangerous bar they infiltrated while following Teddy’s trail, placing everyone in even greater jeopardy just as they were making progress.

This cycle of apologies followed by sabotage has become exhausting to witness, even as the series leaves open the possibility that Cathy’s motives might eventually become clear. Whether she is playing a long game or acting out of selfishness remains one of the most frustrating unresolved questions as the season nears its end.

Despite the slower pace, the episode still finds moments of levity, including a lighthearted discussion among the guys about R&B singers set against a group singalong, reminding viewers that even in dire situations, the show retains its sense of humor.

New episodes of ‘Average Joe’ continue to air weekly on Paramount+ through September 30, leaving several episodes to unravel Teddy’s mystery, Sipho’s increasing instability, and the true intentions behind Cathy’s actions.
