Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune‘ trilogy has established itself as a powerhouse in modern sci-fi cinema, and the upcoming concluding chapter is poised to continue that trend. With ‘Dune: Part Three’ still months away from its theatrical debut, early indicators suggest it could achieve one of the largest openings in the franchise’s history.

The excitement has been building since presale tickets became available earlier this year. When premium-format seats went on sale in April, the entire allotment of IMAX 70mm screenings across just 11 U.S. cities sold out in mere minutes, a phenomenon that repeated during a second wave of presales in August, which caused theater websites to crash.

Current tracking estimates indicate that ‘Dune: Part Three’ could be heading toward a global opening exceeding $200 million. The film has reportedly become the fastest release to sell out BFI IMAX screenings in London, surpassing the record recently set by Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey.’ If these projections hold true, it would mark the biggest opening of Timothée Chalamet’s career.

This potential leap in box office performance is significant for the franchise. ‘Dune: Part Two’ opened domestically to $81.5 million in 2024 and went on to gross over $714 million worldwide, with IMAX screenings contributing a substantial portion of its earnings. A $200 million global debut for the third installment would represent a noteworthy increase from that impressive performance.

Much of the anticipation surrounding ‘Dune: Part Three’ can be attributed to its format. It is the second film ever, following ‘The Odyssey,’ to be shot partially with IMAX’s latest generation of film cameras, and it is expected to showcase a significant portion of its runtime in the full IMAX 1.43:1 aspect ratio, the same immersive format that helped make Nolan’s film an IMAX sensation earlier this year.

The comparison to ‘The Odyssey’ is not coincidental. Nolan’s film became the highest-grossing movie in IMAX history, raking in over $364 million in IMAX ticket sales alone. Industry analysts have noted a likely “halo effect” that could enhance ‘Dune’s’ own premium-format demand as it approaches its December release.

The timing of the release adds another layer of intrigue. ‘Dune: Part Three’ is set to premiere on December 18, the same day as Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ creating a direct box office competition between two of the year’s most anticipated releases. Some industry experts believe Warner Bros. could have benefited from an earlier release to avoid this clash, but the studio has chosen to stick with its December date.

Despite the impending Marvel rivalry, the extensive cast of ‘Dune: Part Three’ has kept expectations high. The film reunites Chalamet and Zendaya alongside Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, and Robert Pattinson in a new villain role, adapting Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune Messiah’ to conclude Villeneuve’s trilogy.

For Chalamet, a $200 million-plus global opening would mark a remarkable transition from art-house favorite to blockbuster lead, a journey that has been steadily building since the first ‘Dune’ film’s release in 2021. Whether the final product can live up to the box office momentum generated by presales remains to be seen, but with premium screenings selling out months in advance, it’s clear that audiences are eager to see the film.

With both Marvel and Warner Bros. gearing up for a significant holiday box office showdown, December is shaping up to be one of the most competitive theatrical periods in recent memory.
