‘Hunger Games’ Star Jennifer Lawrence Makes Instagram Debut with First Post
For over a decade, Jennifer Lawrence has been known as one of Hollywood’s most social-media-shy stars, consistently stating that platforms like Twitter and Instagram weren’t for her. In a 2014 interview with BBC Radio 1, she humorously declared she would “never get Twitter,” adding that any account claiming to be hers was “most certainly” fake.
However, her stance has softened over time. In a 2018 interview with InStyle, Lawrence admitted to being a “voyeur” on social media, observing without engaging. She also revealed that she maintains a secret, anonymous presence on TikTok, where she occasionally engages in comment-section debates without revealing her identity.
This week, Lawrence’s long-standing resistance to social media came to an end. She officially launched a verified Instagram account on Wednesday, September 9, under the handle @jlaw, humorously noting in her bio that “jenniferlawrence was taken” after discovering that her full name was already in use by another user. The account quickly amassed hundreds of thousands of followers within hours, even before she made her first post.
Following her account debut, Lawrence shared her very first post—a short video where she humorously addresses the exact reason she had avoided social media for so long. In the video, she plays up her long-standing fear of online negativity, joking that she would quit the platform the moment anyone leaves a critical comment or even thinks something unkind about her.
This self-aware debut is fitting for someone who has openly discussed the impact of public backlash on her life. In a previous interview with Vanity Fair, Lawrence shared that after starring in sixteen films over six years, a series of which did not perform well, she felt the public had grown weary of her presence, admitting that even attending red carpet events invited criticism.
In that same discussion, she reflected on a pattern of people-pleasing that characterized much of her early career, explaining that saying yes to projects made her feel less accountable for any failures until she reached a point where she felt judged no matter her actions. This context makes her humorous Instagram debut come off as more self-deprecating than dismissive.
Lawrence’s aversion to harsh feedback is not a new theme. She has previously mentioned how searching for her name online left her feeling unsettled, once admitting to Googling her name alongside the term “ugly” to see what results would appear—a habit she later recognized as unhealthy.
Despite her past experiences, Lawrence’s new Instagram account indicates she is entering this new chapter with humor rather than apprehension. Currently, she follows a select group of just 45 accounts, including collaborators from her upcoming film ‘What Happens at Night,’ such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese, alongside close friends like Dakota Johnson and Suki Waterhouse.
Fans have quickly celebrated this milestone, as the rapid growth of her follower count reflects the excitement surrounding her long-awaited entry into the social media realm. Whether she will stick to her lighthearted promise to leave at the first sign of criticism remains uncertain, but for now, her fans are simply delighted that she has finally joined the platform.
With her Instagram debut now behind her, all eyes are on whether Lawrence will continue to post or revert to her previous lurking habits once the initial excitement fades.
