For decades, Hollywood has struggled to bring ‘Hawaii Five-O’ to the big screen, despite the franchise’s inherent appeal featuring stunning tropical landscapes, a legendary theme song, and one of television’s most iconic crime procedural formats. Numerous attempts to create a feature adaptation have repeatedly stalled, primarily due to complex rights issues associated with the original series.

In 2010, this long-standing effort saw a breakthrough when CBS launched a successful reboot series starring Alex O’Loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim, and Grace Park, which ran for a decade. However, a true theatrical version of the franchise has remained elusive, with earlier movie initiatives led by producer George Litto failing to overcome legal hurdles with CBS.

Now, as reported exclusively by Deadline, Paramount Pictures is finally assembling a project to bring ‘Hawaii Five-O’ to theaters, with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ director Destin Daniel Cretton on board to develop and direct. Chris Bremner, known for writing ‘Bad Boys for Life,’ is set to craft the script, while Noah Oppenheim, recognized for producing ‘Jackie,’ will produce.

Although the studio has yet to comment on the project, Deadline indicates that the momentum behind the film is just starting to gather pace. The combination of a beloved procedural franchise with a talented director has industry insiders buzzing about the potential of a well-executed adaptation, both as a standalone film and as a springboard for a larger franchise.

The original ‘Hawaii Five-O’ aired on CBS from 1968 to 1980, created by Leonard Freeman and featuring Jack Lord as Steve McGarrett, the determined head of a state police task force in Hawaii. The show became one of the longest-running police dramas of its time, and its premise, which fuses crime procedural storytelling with breathtaking island scenery, has long been seen as a perfect fit for a movie adaptation.

Cretton’s involvement comes at a particularly strong moment in his career. His work on ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has revitalized Sony’s Spider-Man franchise, with the film dominating the weekend box office since its July 31 release and nearing a billion dollars domestically, while grossing $2.4 billion worldwide.

This success builds on a directing career that has steadily expanded, following his breakout with ‘Short Term 12’ and ‘The Glass Castle’ before he made his blockbuster debut with Marvel’s ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.’ According to Deadline, Cretton is currently regarded as one of the hottest directors in Hollywood, thanks to his recent Spider-Man triumph.

Despite a busy schedule, Cretton has a lot on his plate beyond ‘Hawaii Five-O.’ He is expected to return for the next installment in the Spider-Man series and is also attached to direct an adaptation of the popular anime and manga property ‘Naruto.’

Given the numerous past attempts to adapt ‘Hawaii Five-O’ for film that have fallen through, securing a director with Cretton’s current box office success marks a significant step toward finally realizing this long-gestating project. Whether the film will draw directly from Freeman’s original series or explore new franchise opportunities remains to be seen as development progresses.

With Paramount just beginning to build momentum behind the project and no official studio comments yet, many details are still being finalized, but the combination of talent has already sparked considerable excitement among fans of the franchise.
