‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ continues to take its accidental multiverse hero on increasingly bizarre adventures as it approaches the conclusion of its inaugural season. Since its debut in July, the HBO Max spinoff has embraced its unique premise, sending Stuart Bloom and his friends through a series of fractured realities in search of a way back home.

Episode 8 injects a dose of nostalgia by bringing back a beloved character from ‘The Big Bang Theory’. Fans have already spotted familiar faces appearing in various alternate timelines this season, but this episode directly connects that nostalgia to the ongoing mission to repair the quantum device causing all the chaos.

In this episode, Stuart, Denise, Bert, and Kripke find themselves in a war-torn Pasadena, where defying a commanding officer leads them into serious trouble. The commanding officer, Captain Williams, is portrayed by ‘Big Bang Theory’ alum Dean Norris, and the group’s legal predicaments only escalate from there.

Stuart and his friends are put on trial, represented by the least competent defense attorney, Captain Seibert, played by franchise veteran Joshua Malina. Opposing him is Major Penny, a military version of Kaley Cuoco’s iconic character, and the situation quickly spirals out of control for the group.

The military judges ultimately sentence them to death by firing squad, leaving Stuart with mere moments to devise an escape plan. He manages to activate the quantum entanglement device just in time, teleporting the group away from execution and into yet another alternate universe.

However, there’s a twist. Penny inadvertently gets pulled along during their escape, and upon landing in the new universe, she is transformed into a centaur, joining the rest of its inhabitants.

The new reality offers the group a brief chance to marvel at a centaur version of the Justice League before Stuart realizes their mission is far from complete. The controller needed to fix the device—and ideally, the entire fractured universe—was left behind in the war-torn Pasadena they just fled.

This forces Stuart and the others to “scooch” back into the fray to retrieve it, landing near the ruins of the comic book store that serves as a significant emotional anchor for the series. Unfortunately, Stuart had left the actual machine at camp for safekeeping, which means the group is thrust back into combat with no easy escape in sight.

For Cuoco, returning to Penny for this episode came with a unique set of pressures compared to her earlier appearances in the series. She shared with TVLine that once she arrived on set, it “felt like being home” thanks to the familiar faces from her time on the original show.

With only two episodes remaining in the season, ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ is clearly gearing up for a climactic resolution, even as the journey becomes increasingly bizarre. Penny’s unexpected transformation adds a new layer to a season that has already introduced alternate versions of nearly every regular character from ‘The Big Bang Theory’.

Whether the show will find a way to send Major Penny back home before the end of Season 1 remains uncertain, but her centaur adventure is undoubtedly one of the most memorable twists the series has delivered thus far. HBO Max has already renewed the series for a second season, ensuring that Stuart’s reality-hopping escapades will continue.
