Sony and Marvel have been closely monitoring ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ as it continues to break domestic box office records almost weekly, and the superhero sequel shows no signs of slowing down. What began as a robust summer opening has transformed into one of the most impressive theatrical runs in modern cinema.

The Tom Holland-led sequel debuted with an astounding $360.1 million domestically during its opening weekend, instantly surpassing ‘Avengers: Endgame’ for the largest domestic opening ever. Since then, the film has kept climbing, crossing the $2 billion mark globally just 17 days after its release, making it the eighth film in history to achieve this milestone.

As it heads into the weekend, ‘Brand New Day’ is on the brink of achieving its most significant milestone yet. Currently, the film has grossed approximately $924.9 million domestically, needing just about $12.7 million more to surpass ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ and its $936.6 million total, thus becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time at the North American box office.

‘The Force Awakens’ has held this domestic title since its release in 2015, successfully fending off every contender for over a decade. However, ‘Brand New Day’ has already outpaced that film in nearly every other category, becoming the fastest movie to reach $700 million, $800 million, and $900 million domestically.

The film achieved the $900 million milestone in just 36 days, compared to the 50 days it took ‘The Force Awakens’ to reach the same figure. With a sixth consecutive weekend at the top of the box office secured and industry projections estimating a final domestic total between $950 million and $960 million, breaking the record seems not just possible but inevitable.

One factor contributing to ‘Brand New Day’s sustained performance is its positive reception. The film boasts a certified fresh score of 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, coupled with an impressive 98 percent audience score, fostering strong word-of-mouth long after its record-breaking opening weekend.

The impact has been felt by individual theater chains as well. Cinemark confirmed that the film became the highest-grossing domestic release in the chain’s history in under three weeks, with Justin McDaniel from the company calling this milestone an extraordinary achievement that highlights the enduring appeal of the Spider-Man character across generations.

Beyond its domestic success, ‘Brand New Day’ has also become Sony’s highest-grossing release of all time, both domestically and internationally, and has entered the top 10 highest-grossing films ever worldwide with a total exceeding $2.33 billion. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film stars Holland alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Jon Bernthal, and its box office triumph has contributed to the 2026 domestic box office surpassing the $7 billion mark for the year, which is over 20 percent ahead of where 2025 stood at the same time.

Whether ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ crosses that final milestone this weekend or takes a few more days, it is poised to leave the box office record books significantly altered from before its release.
