The Sister Bond of Tasha Smith and Sidra Smith in Hollywood
Tasha Smith is more than just her dynamic on-screen presence. The star of ‘Why Did I Get Married?’ has an identical twin sister, Sidra Smith, who has quietly established her own respected career behind the camera.
Fans familiar with Tasha from ‘Empire’ or Netflix’s ‘Survival of the Thickest’ are often surprised to discover her unbreakable bond with a twin who has worked on some of the most celebrated projects in Black film history. Here’s everything you should know about these two remarkable sisters.
Tasha Smith was born on February 28, 1971, in Camden, New Jersey, and Sidra shares the same birthday, confirming their status as identical twins. The twins were born to their mother Monique at a young age, as she has described.
Technically, Sidra is the younger twin, with Tasha humorously noting that her sister kicked her out first so she could relax for a few moments. Tasha has mentioned that Sidra currently resides in Harlem. The sisters grew up with a shared history that significantly shaped their paths in the entertainment industry.
Their mother faced struggles with drug addiction during their upbringing but has been clean for over 25 years now. Tasha has reflected on how these experiences influenced her perspective, emphasizing that individuals are not defined by their mistakes but by their ability to overcome them.
Tasha made her acting debut with a minor role in the 1994 comedy ‘Twin Sitters’ and later starred in the NBC comedy series ‘Boston Common’ from 1996 to 1997. She also appeared alongside Tom Arnold in ‘The Tom Show’ on The WB. Her breakout years came through collaborations with Tyler Perry.
Tasha’s acting credits include ‘The Whole Ten Yards,’ ‘Daddy’s Little Girls,’ ‘The Longshots,’ and ‘Why Did I Get Married?’ She portrayed Angela Williams in ‘Why Did I Get Married?’ in 2007 and its sequel ‘Why Did I Get Married Too?’ in 2010, a role that later inspired the spinoff series ‘For Better or Worse.’

Television audiences also recognize Tasha as Carol Hardaway, Cookie Lyon’s sister on ‘Empire.’ More recently, she has appeared in ‘Survival of the Thickest’ on Netflix, portraying Marley, the best friend of Michelle Buteau’s lead character Mavis Beaumont.
Tasha has also ventured into directing, working on the sets of shows like ‘Bel-Air,’ ‘BMF,’ and ‘Big Sky.’ According to Variety, she is set to replace Theresa Randle as Marcus Burnett’s wife in ‘Bad Boys 4,’ with Randle having portrayed the role in the first three films of the franchise.
While Tasha made a name for herself in front of the camera, Sidra forged her own path as a producer, writer, and director. Sidra was a former model who moved to Paris at 19 to work in showrooms before eventually landing in Italy, where she signed with an agency and worked for two years.
She later founded Sidra Smith Casting, a company specializing in ad campaigns and television commercials. Her first feature film, ‘A Luv Tale,’ was released in 1999 and won the Audience Award at the Hollywood Black Film Festival, featuring MC Lyte, Tichina Arnold, and Gina Ravera.

‘A Luv Tale’ tells a love story between two women and has become a cult classic within the LGBT community, with a series adaptation currently in development. The ‘A Luv Tale’ series officially debuted in 2021.
Sidra also produced the 2013 NAACP Image Award-winning documentary ‘Free Angela and All Political Prisoners,’ directed by Shola Lynch and executive produced by Jada Pinkett Smith, whom Sidra personally brought onto the project. Her additional credits include producer roles on ‘Daredevil’ in 2003 and ‘Time of Essence’ in 2023.
Beyond their professional endeavors, Tasha and Sidra maintain a close relationship with their younger sister Che, who has referred to them as two of the most impressive sisters in Hollywood. Che once expressed on Instagram that the twins embody the phrase black girls rock and thanked them for always being there for her.
Tasha and Sidra even share a joint social media presence, with their Facebook page describing Tasha as the actress and Sidra as the producer of the family. This type of public partnership is rare among Hollywood siblings and highlights how closely connected the twins remain despite their different paths in the industry.
The two even collaborated early on, appearing together in ‘Twin Sitters’ before their careers diverged into acting and producing, respectively. Decades later, that same sisterly loyalty continues to manifest in how they support each other’s projects and milestones.
With everything Tasha and Sidra have accomplished both separately and together, from ‘Why Did I Get Married?’ to ‘Free Angela and All Political Prisoners,’ which Smith sister’s body of work impresses you more, and do you think we will ever see these two collaborate on screen again?
