For over twenty years, Mel Gibson has been hinting at a sequel to his polarizing 2004 hit ‘The Passion of the Christ,’ a film that achieved the status of the highest-grossing independent movie ever, despite its intense portrayal of Christ’s final moments. Fans have been eagerly awaiting updates through numerous delays, changing release dates, and ongoing speculation about the sequel’s direction.

That wait is finally coming to an end, albeit with an unexpected twist. When Gibson announced that the project was officially titled ‘The Resurrection of the Christ,’ many assumed that Jim Caviezel would return to reprise the role that made him famous, especially considering Caviezel’s strong support for the sequel over the years.

However, Gibson made the surprising choice to recast the role, selecting Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen instead of using de-aging technology on Caviezel. Now, months after this decision stirred up considerable fan discussion, Gibson has publicly praised Ohtonen’s performance in stepping into such a legendary role.

When asked if Ohtonen’s portrayal would differ from Caviezel’s, Gibson expressed his admiration, stating that while Ohtonen is a different actor, he has delivered an outstanding performance that is both human and peacefully detached, as reported by Collider.

The choice to recast was based on practical considerations rather than creative differences. At 57, Caviezel would have required extensive de-aging effects to convincingly portray Jesus at around age 33, which is traditionally associated with the resurrection, as the sequel picks up just three days after the events of the original film.

Instead of relying on expensive and potentially distracting de-aging technology, Gibson and his team decided to rebuild the cast entirely. Alongside Ohtonen, Mariela Garriga will portray Mary Magdalene, a role previously played by Monica Bellucci, while Kasia Smutniak takes on the role of Mary, mother of Jesus, and Riccardo Scamarcio plays Pontius Pilate.

Ohtonen, recognized for his role as Wolland in Netflix’s ‘The Last Kingdom,’ impressed Gibson with his preparation for the role. The director highlighted Ohtonen’s effortless delivery during the Sermon on the Mount, stating that he required no prompting and performed the material in an incredible manner.

Unlike the original film’s focused narrative on the final hours of Christ, ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’ is set to be a more expansive and ambitious project. Gibson has indicated that this two-part sequel will delve into events beyond the resurrection, including the fall of Satan, the Garden of Eden, and the war in heaven.

This broader vision reflects years of collaboration between Gibson and his longtime partner, Randall Wallace, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of ‘Braveheart.’ Wallace has described the project as deeply personal for Gibson, rather than merely a cash grab following the original’s success. Gibson has even likened the final script to an acid trip, emphasizing how the story diverges from a straightforward chronological retelling.

‘The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One’ is currently scheduled for release on May 6, 2027, with Part Two set to follow on May 25, 2028. Given the weight of Gibson’s comments regarding Ohtonen, this early endorsement may help alleviate concerns for fans still mourning Caviezel’s absence as the film’s release approaches.
