Hayden Panettiere was a familiar face in the entertainment industry, known for her roles as a child star, cheerleader Claire Bennet on ‘Heroes’, and country singer Juliette Barnes on ‘Nashville’. Her candid discussions about personal challenges, including addiction and postpartum depression, positioned her as a significant voice in Hollywood regarding mental health.

In the wake of her tragic passing, her openness has taken on a new significance. Panettiere was discovered unresponsive on August 16 in an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina, where emergency responders found her in cardiac arrest after a 911 call made by her boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother. She was only 36 years old.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death has made notable progress. Sources familiar with the case report that Hickerson has communicated with the Drug Enforcement Administration, and authorities are advancing in their inquiry. Local and federal officials suspect that someone may have provided Panettiere with drugs that contributed to her death, with one insider telling TMZ that they are “zeroing in on a potential drug dealer.”

Authorities are still awaiting toxicology results that will clarify Panettiere’s official cause of death, and as of now, no arrests have been made related to the case. The Greenville Police Department has indicated that there were no signs of foul play during their initial investigation and will continue to assess evidence in collaboration with the coroner’s office to determine if a criminal investigation is necessary.

The involvement of the DEA mirrors another recent case in Hollywood. TMZ has compared this situation to that of Matthew Perry, who passed away in 2023 from a ketamine overdose, which led to a lengthy federal investigation and resulted in five convictions, including two doctors and a dealer known as the “Ketamine Queen.”

Panettiere’s struggles with substance abuse have been well-documented, including her own reflections in her 2026 memoir ‘This Is Me: A Reckoning’, where she detailed her long battle with drug and alcohol addiction.

The events leading to her final hours have intensified scrutiny. Hickerson’s brother reported finding Panettiere unresponsive while Brian was asleep, claiming that Brian administered Narcan, a medication used to counteract opioid overdoses, but attempts to revive her were unsuccessful. An autopsy reportedly revealed no signs of trauma contributing to her death.

Panettiere’s mother, Lesley Vogel, has been particularly outspoken, expressing skepticism about the account provided by Hickerson and his brother. In an interview with the Daily Mail, Vogel described Hickerson’s narrative as “full of holes,” questioning inconsistencies in his timeline and the presence of Narcan in the apartment. She characterized her daughter’s relationship with Hickerson as a deeply unhealthy “codependent bond” that was “so much more powerful than people understand,” despite numerous interventions from family and friends over the years.

The couple’s relationship had a tumultuous history prior to Panettiere’s death. They began dating in 2018 and separated after Hickerson’s arrest for a domestic violence incident involving Panettiere in 2020, although reports suggest they remained on-and-off despite a restraining order that was in place for years.

Since Panettiere’s passing, Hickerson has largely refrained from public commentary, issuing only a brief statement through his attorney, Sloan Ellis, which noted that police found no signs of foul play and that he would not comment further out of respect for Panettiere’s loved ones and the ongoing investigation. His cooperation with the DEA indicates that the case is entering a more critical phase, potentially determining not only the circumstances of Panettiere’s death but also accountability for those who may have supplied the drugs involved.
