‘Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War‘ has spent the last four years meticulously building towards one of anime’s most awaited series finales, adapting Tite Kubo’s concluding manga arc through a carefully staggered four-part release structure. With “The Calamity,” the fourth and final cour, currently airing its climactic stretch, fans have been eagerly counting down the days until Ichigo Kurosaki’s journey reaches its end.

However, that excitement faced an unexpected hurdle this weekend, arriving at a particularly inconvenient time. The announcement came just an hour before Episode 49 was set to premiere on Hulu and Disney+, catching viewers off guard just moments before they anticipated the next chapter of the saga.

The production committee has officially postponed Episodes 49 and 50 of ‘Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity,’ rescheduling the anime’s final two installments to October 19 and October 26 respectively. This delay impacts both the Japanese broadcast schedule and international streaming release dates across all platforms airing the series.

In its official statement, the production committee explained that the decision was made to enhance the quality of the climax and deliver the work as powerfully as possible, a sentiment echoed in comments reported by CBR. Rather than rushing the finale to meet its original air dates, the team has chosen to take extra time to refine the animation leading into Ichigo’s climactic battles.

To avoid leaving a gap in the broadcast schedule, TV Tokyo will fill the interim weeks with a series of “Climax Selection” episodes, which will feature curated recap installments highlighting key moments from earlier in the Thousand-Year Blood War saga. These selections are set to air on September 19, September 26, October 5, and October 12, providing fans with a structured lead-up before the story resumes.

Episode 49, officially the ninth episode of “The Calamity,” will now air in Japan on TV Tokyo on October 19 before being available on BS TV Tokyo the following day, with streaming platforms following suit on October 20. Episode 50, the series finale, will then conclude the broadcast on October 26 via TV Tokyo, with BS TV Tokyo and streaming releases following on October 27.

This timing means international viewers on platforms like Hulu and Disney+ will need to wait about an additional month beyond the anime’s original schedule to see how Kubo’s decade-spanning story ultimately concludes. Given that “The Calamity” has a total of just 10 episodes, the delay has left some fans expressing frustration over the extended wait so close to the finish line.

‘Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War’ has followed an unusually staggered release pattern since its debut, arriving in separate cours titled “The Separation” in 2022 and “The Conflict” in subsequent years before reaching “The Calamity” this past July. This structure has allowed Pierrot Films to maintain animation quality throughout the adaptation, even if it has occasionally resulted in longer waits between installments than a traditional single-season release would entail.

The franchise’s broader history dates back to the original 2004 television anime, which ran for eight years before its own hiatus, followed by a decade-long wait for Kubo’s final arc to receive proper animated treatment. Given the immense anticipation surrounding this conclusion, the production team’s choice to prioritize quality over adhering to a fixed date reflects the significant weight resting on how the story ultimately wraps up.

While a one-month wait is undoubtedly frustrating for fans eager to see the finale, many have noted online that a brief delay is far preferable to the kind of animator overwork that has affected other high-profile anime productions in the past. With new dates now confirmed, ‘Bleach’s’ 22-year animated journey is finally set to conclude by the end of October.
