Christopher Nolan’s collaboration with Universal Pictures has already yielded a significant box office surprise with ‘Oppenheimer,’ a three-hour biopic about nuclear physics that unexpectedly became a billion-dollar cultural phenomenon. This partnership paved the way for an even more ambitious follow-up, centered entirely around IMAX cameras and Homer’s ancient epic poem.

Few could have anticipated just how rewarding that gamble would ultimately be. Since its release this summer, ‘The Odyssey‘ has spent months rewriting box office records at a pace that has left industry analysts genuinely astonished, defying all conventional expectations for a three-hour, R-rated original release.

That momentum has now culminated in the studio’s most significant milestone yet. By the end of its ninth weekend in theaters, ‘The Odyssey’ will officially become Universal Pictures’ highest-grossing movie of all time, surpassing 2015’s ‘Jurassic World’ with a global total of $1.684 billion.

That figure breaks down to $601.2 million domestically and $1.083 billion internationally, edging past ‘Jurassic World’s‘ previous studio record of $1.677 billion. This achievement places ‘The Odyssey’ as the 12th highest-grossing film in box office history and the third-biggest non-franchise title of all time, trailing only James Cameron’s ‘Titanic’ and ‘Avatar’ on that particular chart.

Donna Langley, chairman of NBCUniversal Entertainment, celebrated the milestone by commending Nolan and producer Emma Thomas’s work as something destined to be remembered among cinema’s most ambitious achievements, calling it one of the most ambitious and brilliantly executed films in cinematic history, a sentiment echoed in NBCUniversal’s official statement.

What makes this achievement particularly remarkable is that ‘Jurassic World’ still holds Universal’s domestic crown, having finished its 2015 run with $653.4 million in North America compared to ‘The Odyssey’s’ $601.2 million. Nolan’s film made up that gap almost entirely through its extraordinary international performance, becoming the first film that isn’t a sequel or remake to cross $1 billion outside North America since ‘Avatar’ accomplished the feat in early 2010.

‘The Odyssey’ has also quietly become the highest-grossing Universal release ever in 45 individual international markets, including France, Italy, India, Australia, and South Korea. This kind of broad, market-by-market dominance reflects genuinely unusual global staying power for a film built around dense, three-hour mythological storytelling rather than an established franchise property.

This latest milestone adds to an already extensive list of records the film has broken throughout its release. ‘The Odyssey’ now stands as Nolan’s biggest film ever both domestically and internationally, surpassing ‘The Dark Knight’s’ previous domestic mark of $534.9 million, while also becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film in history, edging past ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s’ $1.33 billion global total.

The film experienced a remarkable 6.39 multiple at the global box office relative to its opening weekend, a figure that speaks directly to its unusually consistent week-over-week performance rather than a front-loaded opening followed by a steep decline. It even returned to the number one position globally during its eighth weekend, dropping just 9 percent domestically that frame, an almost unheard-of level of stability for a film so deep into its theatrical run.

Universal’s broader 2026 slate has benefited enormously from this success, with the studio becoming the first to cross both $3 billion internationally and $4 billion globally for the year, powered by ‘The Odyssey’ alongside hits like ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ and the Michael Jackson biopic ‘Michael.’ With the studio now sitting at $4.92 billion in worldwide grosses for 2026 and counting all major competitors, Universal has firmly established itself as the year’s dominant theatrical player.

As ‘The Odyssey’ heads into awards season fresh off this historic achievement, its box office run has already cemented Nolan’s status as one of the few filmmakers still capable of turning an ambitious, non-franchise passion project into a genuine worldwide phenomenon. Given how consistently the film has outperformed expectations at every turn, its eventual final tally could climb even higher before its theatrical run finally winds down.
