Kit Harington Shares His Excitement About Joining HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ as Gilderoy Lockhart
HBO’s ‘Harry Potter‘ series has spent the past year assembling a highly scrutinized cast, with each new addition sparking debates among fans comparing it to the beloved film franchise. Major names like John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Hagrid have already been confirmed, alongside young leads Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton portraying Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
Earlier this year, the casting process faced a hiccup when Nicholas Hoult, initially set to play Gilderoy Lockhart, withdrew due to scheduling conflicts. Rather than postpone the character’s introduction, HBO swiftly sought a replacement for the vain Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, who is slated to appear in the show’s second season.
Kit Harington stepped into the role, and he revealed that the decision to join the project was almost instantaneous. On the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Harington expressed his enthusiasm for the series even before he was offered the role. “When I knew they were doing this show, I was like, I think that’s a brilliant idea, I think they can really delve into it further than the films did,” he shared. “I’m fully supportive of it.”
For Harington, taking on this role feels particularly familiar. He previously voiced Lockhart in the Harry Potter audiobook editions, making this his first live-action portrayal of the character. This connection likely made the offer feel even more natural when it came.
His comments reflect a broader sentiment among the show’s expanding cast, many of whom cite the series format as a significant attraction. A multi-season adaptation allows the creative team to explore subplots and secondary characters in greater depth than the original films could within their limited runtime, a point Harington emphasized as part of his excitement for the project.
Season 2 will focus on the events of ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,’ where Lockhart, a celebrated yet incompetent wizard author, joins the Hogwarts staff and quickly becomes a fan favorite for his charm and obliviousness. Filming for this season is expected to commence in fall 2026, with co-showrunners Francesca Gardiner and Jon Brown overseeing the next chapter after HBO renewed the series early back in May.

Harington’s casting continues the trend of recognizable actors joining the ‘Harry Potter’ universe after their own defining roles, following other high-profile names who have joined the series during its casting process. His experience on ‘Game of Thrones’ provides a familiar background within HBO’s ecosystem, likely making the transition into this universe a seamless fit for the network.
With the first season set to premiere this Christmas and the second already in the works, Harington’s addition as Lockhart brings another high-profile name to a cast that shows no signs of slowing down. Fans eager to see how his portrayal compares to Kenneth Branagh’s film version will have to wait until season 2 to find out.
