Jeremy Saulnier has established himself as one of the most consistently gripping filmmakers today, with works like ‘Green Room’ and ‘Rebel Ridge’ highlighting his ability to transform ordinary individuals into desperate survivors. His upcoming project has remained cloaked in secrecy for months, with vague details and a placeholder title that offered little insight into what audiences might expect.

This week, that mystery began to unravel. A24 surprised viewers at theatrical screenings of ‘Resident Evil’ by debuting a teaser for the film, now officially titled ‘Slayground‘, which was previously known simply as ‘October.’

The plot centers on Cory Michael Smith, who becomes the prime suspect in a mass murder investigation. After escaping police custody, he goes on the run to prove his innocence while a massive manhunt closes in. Much of the chase reportedly unfolds around the haunted attraction referenced in the title, where the film’s marketing cleverly blurs the line between staged scares and something far more authentic.

The title change also reflects this setting. Reports indicate that A24 opted to move away from “October” once they decided not to wait until that month for the film’s release. The new title, “Slayground,” directly ties to the haunted attraction central to the story, providing a more fitting and sharper marketing angle.

The film features an ensemble cast that includes Chase Sui Wonders, Sophie Wilde, Young Mazino, and Stephen Root, along with Imogen Poots, James Badge Dale, and Matty Matheson. This lineup offers Saulnier a blend of rising stars and seasoned character actors, a combination that has proven effective in his previous works focused on small groups facing escalating horrors.

Adding to the excitement is the film’s score, reportedly composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, the Oscar-winning duo known for their acclaimed scores for David Fincher and Luca Guadagnino projects, including their iconic work on ‘The Social Network.’ Their involvement has sparked considerable enthusiasm among genre fans, as their signature tension-building style aligns perfectly with Saulnier’s stripped-down, high-stakes filmmaking.

A24’s marketing strategy has leaned heavily into mystery, launching a “Run Like Hell” campaign featuring a countdown clock on the film’s official website and cryptic messaging that reflects the haunted-house theme of the story. While the studio has yet to confirm an exact release date, the teaser reportedly concludes with the word “Fall,” and internal screenings suggest a runtime of approximately two and a half hours.

Whether A24 will manage to release ‘Slayground’ in theaters before the year ends remains uncertain, especially considering how recently the marketing campaign has begun. Regardless, the combination of Saulnier’s tightly wound storytelling with such an unsettling premise has fans eagerly awaiting A24’s next reveal.
