Marvel’s Upcoming Live-Action Disney+ Show ‘Zodiac’ — What We Know So Far
Marvel’s live-action television ventures on Disney+ have faced significant challenges recently, with cancellations and reduced programming becoming commonplace. Once a vast universe of interconnected series, the landscape has shrunk as the studio adjusts its streaming strategy.
This week has seen fans grappling with disappointing news regarding several major Marvel projects. However, amidst this uncertainty, a new title has surfaced that offers a glimmer of hope for fans.
Sources confirm that Marvel Television has officially greenlit a new spy thriller currently known by the codename ‘Zodiac.’ This announcement comes about two months after filming wrapped on ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ season three, and it fits into a broader trend at the studio, which reportedly maintains 3 to 5 live-action shows in development at any time.
Details about ‘Zodiac’ are still limited. The exact reference of the title remains unclear, but a notable connection in Marvel Comics involves a criminal organization led by a villain named Scorpio, whose members are themed after different zodiac signs.
This group has historically been at odds with S.H.I.E.L.D. in the comics, aligning with the “spy thriller” label associated with the project. While reports indicate that ‘Zodiac’ has been “greenlit,” it is still uncertain whether this means the show is fully ordered as a series or remains in active development.
The news about ‘Zodiac’ comes at a bittersweet time for Marvel Television. The Hollywood Reporter recently revealed that the upcoming third season of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ will be its last, concluding a series that brought back Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio for a new chapter in Hell’s Kitchen storytelling.
Adding to the complexity, Marvel has quietly parted ways with showrunner Dario Scardapane, whose contract was not renewed. This is a significant shake-up, especially as Scardapane exits during the post-production phase of the season, leaving uncertainty about who will guide the final season to completion.
‘Daredevil: Born Again’ season 3 is anticipated to premiere sometime in 2027, marking the conclusion of a long journey for the character, whose narrative has traversed multiple platforms and undergone various showrunner changes since debuting on Netflix over a decade ago.
This latest round of cuts also saw Marvel cancel the Emmy-nominated ‘Wonder Man’ after initially renewing it for a second season, indicating a more selective approach to its release calendar.
On a brighter note, subscribers can look forward to ‘VisionQuest,’ featuring Paul Bettany as the concluding installment of the ‘WandaVision’ trilogy, which is still set to debut in October.
The rationale behind these cuts appears to be linked to audience metrics. Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Television, had reportedly advocated for ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ to become an annual series on Disney+, but a significant drop in viewership for season 2 seems to have influenced the decision to conclude the series.
This aligns with a broader trend of Marvel Television scaling back its ambitions since the early days of the Disney+ boom, when the studio managed several overlapping series. Currently, the focus seems to be on fewer, more tightly controlled projects, with ‘Zodiac’ potentially representing the next phase of that streamlined strategy.
Whether ‘Zodiac’ will draw from the Scorpio-led villain team, explore another facet of Marvel’s extensive comic book universe, or present an entirely original concept remains to be seen. Nonetheless, for a division that has mostly delivered disappointing news lately, the prospect of a new spy thriller is a refreshing change of pace.
