‘Street Fighter’ Chun-Li Transformation: Callina Liang Reveals Battle-Ready Look
Video game adaptations have had a tumultuous journey in cinema, but Legendary’s upcoming live-action ‘Street Fighter’ is gaining traction among fans eager to see how it captures Capcom’s legendary characters. With a star-studded cast and a director renowned for merging action with authentic character development, excitement has been building steadily.
A significant portion of that anticipation revolves around Chun-Li, arguably the most iconic character in the franchise and a beloved figure in fighting games. As the self-proclaimed “First Lady of Fighting Games,” any live-action portrayal of her carries substantial weight for devoted fans.
The wait is over, as new set photos and a direct message from star Callina Liang have provided fans with their most comprehensive look yet at her transformation into the character. Through a series of Instagram Stories and posts, Liang showcased her complete Chun-Li costume, captioning one clip from the movie’s set with a straightforward message: “I don’t have time to photoshop ok.”

The images depict Liang fully embodying the character, donning Chun-Li’s recognizable blue outfit, complete with her signature ox-horn hair buns and spiked wrist cuffs. One shot features her posing next to a production RV labeled “3. CHUN-LI,” while another set photo reveals her costume visibly torn and scuffed, with her arms marked with what seems to be blood and grime from a fight sequence.

Preparing for Chun-Li’s kick-heavy combat style reportedly took a toll on Liang during production. In comments to Empire, she shared that she trained approximately two hours daily in Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and Wushu to master the character’s signature moves, while also revamping her diet to build the muscle necessary for the role.
“When I was bulking, I ate 12 eggs a day. Every two hours I had to have a meal, and I was on the verge of throwing up. But it worked. By the end of the shoot, my thighs had grown six-and-a-half centimeters each,” Liang explained to Empire about the physically demanding process. This level of commitment has become a recurring theme among the film’s cast, with reports indicating that her co-stars underwent similarly rigorous preparation for their roles.
Liang has also mentioned her dedication to the source material, reportedly downloading every version of ‘Street Fighter’ she could find and analyzing slow-motion footage of Chun-Li’s in-game moves frame by frame. This meticulous attention to detail appears to be paying off, as fans online are praising how closely her look mirrors Chun-Li’s classic design.
Set in 1993, the film follows Chun-Li as she recruits estranged fighters Ryu and Ken Masters for the World Warrior Tournament, ultimately drawing them into a larger conspiracy. Andrew Koji plays Ryu, while Noah Centineo portrays Ken, with David Dastmalchian rounding out the main cast as the villainous M. Bison.
The film’s cast is impressive, featuring Jason Momoa as Blanka, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog, Cody Rhodes as Guile, and Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i as Akuma, contributing to one of the more eclectic ensembles in recent video game adaptations.
