Florence Pugh Shines at ‘East of Eden’ Screening Before Netflix Premiere
Adapting literary classics comes with its own set of challenges, and few projects carry as much weight as Netflix’s upcoming rendition of John Steinbeck’s ‘East of Eden.’ The iconic 1952 novel has previously been brought to life on screen by Elia Kazan in his acclaimed 1955 film, and now his granddaughter, Zoe Kazan, is taking the reins to reimagine this multigenerational tale for contemporary audiences.
This familial connection adds a significant layer to the promotional efforts, allowing viewers to see how this new adaptation stands up to her grandfather’s legacy as it approaches its release. After a lengthy development period, the series is now entering its final promotional phase ahead of its debut.
Florence Pugh and Zoe Kazan captured attention at a preview screening for ‘East of Eden’ in West Hollywood last week, posing for photographs in anticipation of the series’ October 1 premiere on Netflix. Pugh dazzled in a Rodarte embroidered yellow tulle outfit complemented by Bvlgari jewelry during the special screening and discussion event, held at The London West Hollywood at Beverly Hills.

Kazan, who is the series’ co-showrunner, writer, and executive producer, joined Pugh at the event as they continued their promotional tour for the project. This screening was one of the first major public appearances linked to a series that has reportedly been in development since 2020.

‘East of Eden’ reinterprets Steinbeck’s expansive family saga through the lens of Cathy Ames, portrayed by Pugh, who also serves as an executive producer on the seven-episode limited series. The narrative follows the Trask family across generations, delving into themes of free will and the moral dichotomy that established the original novel as a cornerstone of American literature.

Supporting Pugh are Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask and Mike Faist as his half-brother Charles Trask, with Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Ciarán Hinds, and Martha Plimpton rounding out the cast. Joseph Zada and Joe Anders also star as Caleb and Aron Trask, the twin sons at the heart of much of the generational conflict.
Kazan has expressed high regard for Pugh’s portrayal of Cathy Ames, noting that casting her was an obvious choice from the outset. “I didn’t have a backup. I didn’t have another person that I thought would be just as good. She is the exact right person to play Cathy,” Kazan stated in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum.

Kazan continued to commend Pugh’s instincts and her ability to command the camera throughout the five-month filming process. “Her awareness of the camera is unparalleled. I don’t use this word lightly: I think she’s a genius. I watched her on set for five months. I have no more insight now as to how she works than I did before,” Kazan added in the same interview.
Such praise from a showrunner with a deep personal connection to the source material speaks volumes about the confidence placed in Pugh’s performance. With her impressive portfolio of acclaimed roles, expectations for her portrayal of Cathy Ames are already soaring as the show’s release approaches.
