‘The Beast in Me’ Renewed for Season 2 at Netflix With Claire Danes Returning
Few shows have transitioned from limited series to an ongoing franchise as unexpectedly as this one. Netflix’s gripping psychological thriller was initially designed as a standalone story, won accolades as such, and concluded with a definitive ending. Now, the streaming giant has altered its course, and ‘The Beast in Me’ is officially set to return.
The series premiered on Netflix in November 2025 as an eight-episode drama created by Gabe Rotter, with Howard Gordon as the showrunner. It centers on Aggie Wiggs (Claire Danes), a celebrated author who has withdrawn from public life following the tragic death of her young son. She becomes fascinated by her new neighbor Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys), a real estate executive accused of murdering his wife.
That storyline culminated in a dramatic finale, where Nile was revealed to be a serial killer after attempting to frame Aggie. It felt like a conclusive ending, making Thursday’s announcement a genuine surprise. Netflix confirmed that the series has been renewed for Season 2, with Danes returning to reprise her role as Aggie and also serve as an executive producer.
Gordon will remain involved but will share co-showrunner duties with Daniel Pearle, a writer and executive producer from Season 1. As part of the renewal, Gordon has signed an overall deal with Netflix through his Teakwood Lane Productions banner, where he will develop new series for the platform. Gordon mentioned to Variety that the team had always stated they would only pursue a second season if they found “a story that was worthy of the first.”
Importantly, Netflix has not disclosed whether Rhys will return, and no plot details have been revealed. Given the first season’s conclusion, this remains a significant question. Production is anticipated to begin in New Jersey this November.
The renewal also impacts the show’s awards eligibility. With Danes returning as Aggie, the series will transition from the limited series category to the drama series category for future Emmys, as reported by TheWrap.

The decision is supported by impressive viewership numbers. The series debuted at No. 1 in Netflix’s Global Top 10 and made the top 10 in 88 countries, amassing 43 million views within its first seven weeks. In the US, it spent eight weeks on Nielsen’s streaming charts for original series, accumulating just under 97 million hours of watch time.
It was also a significant contender during awards season. The show received nine Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and lead acting nominations for both Danes and Rhys, winning two: Lead Actor and Original Dramatic Score. Rhys made history by becoming the first performer to win two lead acting categories in the same year, adding the comedy trophy for Apple TV’s ‘Widow’s Bay’, and the first to achieve a career sweep of all three lead acting categories after his earlier win for ‘The Americans’.
Netflix’s head of scripted series, Jinny Howe, remarked that the series captivated global audiences and showcased extraordinary performances led by Danes. The streamer characterized the deal with Gordon as a partnership that welcomes him to the Netflix family.

‘The Beast in Me’ is part of a broader trend of shows that begin as limited series and then continue. The Hollywood Reporter noted that the phenomenon of series being un-renewed is now established, and the reverse is also occurring. This move follows the precedent set by ‘The White Lotus’, which shifted categories at the Emmys.
For the creative team, the challenge will be to deliver a narrative that feels like a natural evolution rather than a cash-in. Gordon, known for ‘Homeland’ and ’24’, reunited with Danes on this project, and their collaboration is clearly one of the reasons the streamer sought more content.
The supporting cast from Season 1 included Brittany Snow, Natalie Morales, and Jonathan Banks, with executive producers including Conan O’Brien and Jodie Foster. It remains to be seen who else will return and what mystery will draw Aggie back in.
