‘Jack Reacher’ has never been a family-friendly show. The Prime Video sensation is known for its intense fistfights, gruesome villains, and a protagonist who tackles problems with a level of violence that would make most action heroes flinch. However, the author of the series, Lee Child, has indicated that the upcoming season will delve into territory he wasn’t certain could be adapted for the screen.

Season 4 of ‘Reacher’ debuted on August 12, featuring Alan Ritchson reprising his role as the wandering hero. The season amassed around 5.5 billion viewing minutes within four weeks, securing its place at the top of Nielsen’s US streaming charts. Its finale aired on September 16, coinciding with the full release of the first season of the spin-off ‘Neagley’. As the show continues to enjoy its success, fans are eager to know what lies ahead.

Lee Child recently shared his thoughts on the future of the series. In an exclusive interview with Collider to promote his new novel ‘Chain Reaction’, he revealed that Season 5 will adapt ‘Make Me’, a story he described as particularly brutal. Child expressed uncertainty about how Prime Video will handle the material, stating, “that is a brutal story. I mean, it’s a disgusting story, really,” emphasizing that it is not suitable for family viewing.

The novel, which is the 20th installment in the Jack Reacher series, begins with Reacher arriving in the small town of Mother’s Rest, intrigued by its peculiar name. There, he encounters private investigator Michelle Chang, whose colleague vanished while probing the town. What initially appears to be a simple missing-person case evolves into something far more sinister.

The horror of the story lies in the operation that lurks in plain sight, preying on vulnerable individuals for profit. Screen Rant has labeled the book as one of Child’s most disturbing works, while Collider has referred to the upcoming season as the show’s most “disgusting” chapter yet. Prime Video confirmed the adaptation during San Diego Comic-Con in July.

This presents a delicate balancing act for the show. Collider pointed out that if Prime Video cuts too much content, it risks losing the deeply sinister essence of Mother’s Rest. Conversely, if the adaptation is too faithful to the source material, it may face the very issues Child has highlighted. Nevertheless, ‘Reacher’ has never been marketed as a family show, so the series might push boundaries further than most.

Child emphasized that no specifics about the screen adaptation have been confirmed yet. Other commentators have raised concerns that the storyline may overlap with the formula established in Season 4 and even with ‘Neagley’, making execution a critical challenge.

Filming for the new season is already in progress. Ritchson announced that production commenced in July, with cameras rolling on July 20 in Ontario, Canada. Reports indicate that all eight scripts were completed ahead of schedule, and the show was renewed in May, well before Season 4 premiered.

Amazon has also revealed four new cast members for the upcoming season: Amanda Ip, Jay Baruchel, Ciara Bravo, and Kevin Durand will join Ritchson. Nick Santora continues as showrunner, with the series produced by Paramount Television Studios and Amazon MGM Studios.

While no release date has been set, considering the show’s history of approximately 1.5 years between seasons, GamesRadar predicts the next season could arrive as early as December 2027 or early 2028. Men’s Journal speculates it might debut next fall in 2027, given the shorter turnaround.

In the meantime, Child has plenty of material to keep fans engaged. ‘Chain Reaction’ is set to release on October 20, and he will co-write ‘Zero Margin’, the first Frances Neagley novel, with Yasmin Angoe, which is expected in spring 2027. This gives readers a chance to prepare for one of the darkest narratives in the franchise.
