Kevin Feige Confirms Florence Pugh’s Yelena As the Heart of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Marvel Studios has been meticulously laying the groundwork for its upcoming mega-crossover, gradually revealing casting news, concept art, and enigmatic hints to keep fans speculating about who will truly lead ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ With a cast that spans multiple franchises and timelines, identifying the film’s emotional core has become a fun challenge for dedicated fans.
Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova has steadily risen through the ranks of this ensemble, transforming from a standout supporting character into one of Marvel’s most valuable players. Her evolution from ‘Black Widow’ to ‘Hawkeye’ and now taking the lead in ‘Thunderbolts’ suggests that Marvel is increasingly committed to her character.
Recently, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed Yelena’s pivotal role. In a new Vanity Fair cover story featuring Pugh, Feige indicated that Yelena will serve as a crucial throughline, anchoring the expansive narrative of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ from beginning to end, as detailed in the magazine’s exclusive profile.
This aligns with comments Feige made earlier this year at BiliBiliWorld in Shanghai, where he first hinted at the significance of Yelena’s character. During his July appearance, he told the audience, “If you’re a fan of Yelena, wait until Avengers: Doomsday. Yelena plays a big part in that,” teasing that fans “might see Yelena a little bit sooner in the movies,” as reported by Entertainment Weekly.
Yelena made her debut in 2021’s ‘Black Widow’ as Natasha Romanoff’s witty adoptive sister, quickly winning over fans with her humor and emotional depth. She returned for a supporting role in ‘Hawkeye’ before stepping into a leading position in ‘Thunderbolts,’ a film that culminated in her team rebranding as the New Avengers.
This rebranding sets the stage for her expanded role in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ where she is expected to reunite with fellow Thunderbolts members like Red Guardian, Winter Soldier, and U.S. Agent as part of the larger New Avengers team. With this group now positioned as a central faction within the film’s extensive roster, Yelena’s storyline appears to be reaching a long-awaited climax.
Feige’s earlier hints also suggested that fans wouldn’t have to wait until December to see more of Yelena, pointing toward a potential appearance in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ the only Marvel Studios theatrical release scheduled before ‘Doomsday’ hits theaters.

The Vanity Fair feature is part of the magazine’s October 2026 issue, which marks the return of its New Establishment franchise, naming Pugh a “Renaissance Woman” alongside a host of influential figures in entertainment, business, and culture. The cover shoot, captured by Nadine Ijewere, comes during a particularly busy time for the actress.
Pugh recently attended Netflix’s first-ever UK Upfront to promote her upcoming series ‘East of Eden,’ adding yet another high-profile project to her impressive résumé that already includes ‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘Dune: Part Two,’ and ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.’ With her involvement in prestigious television, blockbuster franchises, and now a major magazine feature, the timing of Feige’s remarks seems far from coincidental.
As ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ prepares for its December 18 release, Marvel is clearly focused on keeping Yelena at the forefront of discussions leading up to the film. Whether she ultimately leads a new team, faces off against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, or serves as the audience’s emotional anchor remains to be seen, but Feige’s comments indicate her role will carry significant narrative weight rather than just a fleeting cameo.
For a character who began as comic relief in the shadow of her more renowned sister, this kind of recognition signifies a major turning point. It also raises the stakes for how ‘Doomsday’ will manage its large ensemble, given the considerable responsibility now resting on Pugh’s shoulders.
