‘Avengers: Endgame’ Returns to Theaters and Could Dominate This Weekend
Seven years is a significant span in Hollywood, allowing entire franchises to emerge, decline, and reboot. Yet, one of the most monumental films ever made has made a triumphant return to theaters as if it never left.
This kind of enduring appeal isn’t something every re-release can boast, especially when facing a packed lineup of fresh titles. This weekend’s box office is demonstrating that nostalgia, when executed well, can still outshine the competition.
‘Avengers: Endgame’ has re-emerged in theaters as ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ with early estimates projecting it to earn between $25 million and $28 million domestically, positioning it as a strong contender for the top spot. This is an impressive feat for a film that debuted seven years ago, especially against several new wide releases.

The re-release kicked off on Friday with $11.2 million from 3,060 locations, according to studio estimates, while global weekend projections have surged beyond $85 million. When combined with its original theatrical earnings of $2.812 billion, ‘Endgame’ is now within reach of a $2.9 billion lifetime total.
‘Endgame Encore’ wasn’t the only major title vying for attention this weekend, competing against Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ reboot, Brad Pitt’s survival thriller ‘Heart of the Beast,’ A24’s ‘Primetime,’ and the animated family film ‘Forgotten Island.’ ‘Resident Evil’ had previously dominated the box office with a franchise-best $61 million debut, making it the most direct competitor for the top spot.
Even with that lineup, ‘Endgame’ has managed to stay near the top of the charts, with some tracking estimates suggesting its weekend total could reach as high as $28 million. This range would place it in close competition with ‘Resident Evil’s’ second weekend numbers, setting the stage for a genuinely tight finish between a new franchise entry and a film that first premiered in 2019.

Part of the appeal drawing audiences back is the version of ‘Endgame’ currently playing, which features a modified ending and new post-credits scenes designed to set the stage for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ this December. Directed once again by Anthony and Joe Russo, this altered cut provides dedicated fans with a reason to revisit the finale, even if they have seen it multiple times.
The re-release is part of Disney’s newly launched Infinity Vision initiative, which has already certified 75 premium large-format theaters in the United States and 300 internationally for enhanced presentations. Disney reportedly received over 7,500 applications from exhibitors eager to have their screens certified for the program by late June, highlighting the significant industry interest surrounding this rollout.
This level of excitement aligns with the broader context surrounding ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which brings together much of the franchise’s ensemble cast when it premieres on December 18. Given the competitive nature of this weekend’s box office, ‘Endgame’s’ strong return indicates that Marvel fans are more engaged than ever as they anticipate the next chapter.

For reference, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ remains the second-highest-grossing movie in history worldwide, only behind ‘Avatar’s’ $2.9 billion global total. A successful encore run could bring it closer to, or even surpass, that figure before its theatrical run concludes.
Regardless of the final numbers this weekend, the fact that a seven-year-old film is contending for the top spot against a slate of new releases speaks volumes about its enduring appeal. It also indicates that Marvel’s marketing prowess and the dedicated fanbase behind it are fully engaged as they prepare for December’s most significant crossover event yet.
