Chris Hansen Critiques Robert Pattinson’s Performance in ‘Primetime’ as Unlikable
Robert Pattinson has sparked significant public reaction from the real-life figure he portrays in ‘Primetime,’ A24’s dramatized take on Chris Hansen’s ‘To Catch a Predator’ era. This tension has intensified now that Hansen has seen the completed film, leading to months of back-and-forth before its official release.
The friction reached a new high when Hansen attended an opening night screening in Times Square after months of public disputes about the project. His verdict, shared shortly after, made it clear how he felt about Pattinson’s interpretation of his persona.
On a special episode of his podcast “Have a Seat,” Hansen candidly expressed his thoughts on Pattinson’s performance. “This version of Chris Hansen, played by Robert Pattinson, was so detached, so unhinged, so dark, so unlikable,” he stated, as reported alongside Fox News host Jesse Watters. When asked if Pattinson captured any of his actual sense of humor, Hansen was straightforward: “None of my humor. This guy was so detached,” he remarked.
Hansen went beyond critiquing the performance itself, labeling the film as “over the top” and estimating that “98% of that movie that I just saw was pure fiction.” He strongly opposed how accurately the production represented both his career and personal life.
When Watters asked Hansen to grade Pattinson’s performance, he assigned a D, a notably harsh critique considering the attention the role has garnered for Pattinson this awards season. Hansen also expressed disappointment with how the film depicted his family life, portraying him as an aloof father, a characterization he found particularly offensive.
Beyond his personal feelings, Hansen argued that the film’s fictionalized narrative undermined the broader efforts to combat child exploitation. He expressed frustration that director Lance Oppenheim referred to the project as a “love letter,” a framing that has altered his perspective on certain aspects of Hollywood filmmaking.

Hansen noted that his reaction extended beyond his own viewing experience. He mentioned that the portrayal had upset both his current and former colleagues, with around 14 members of his current crew attending a screening together and later texting him their collective thoughts on the film.
Despite his negative feedback, Hansen stated that he isn’t actively discouraging people from watching ‘Primetime’ for themselves. “If you’re a fan of A24, if you’re a fan of Robert Pattinson, make up your own mind, go see it,” he advised, while cautioning viewers to “realize that when you do go see it that it is absolutely a fictional portrayal of me, of my colleagues, of the series, and of the very hard, diligent enterprise work that we did then and do now.”

While Hansen has previously indicated he was considering legal options against A24 regarding the film, he expressed a desire to focus his energy elsewhere, including his own sanctioned documentary project titled “I’m Chris Hansen.” Even amidst his critical review, Hansen did offer Pattinson one compliment, acknowledging the actor’s overall talent despite his strong objections to the specific character he portrayed.
