Melissa Barrera Open to Returning to ‘Scream’ Only If Rights Change Hands
Franchise comebacks in Hollywood often follow a straightforward path: a call is made, a deal is signed, and a beloved character returns to wrap up unfinished stories. However, for one ‘Scream’ actress, the journey back to the franchise that solidified her status as a horror icon is far from simple.
Melissa Barrera has spent recent years navigating a complex relationship with the series that marked a significant chapter in her career. Her exit from the franchise in 2023 was anything but subtle, and the repercussions continue to influence discussions about her potential future involvement.
In a recent interview with JustWatch, Barrera expressed that while a return to ‘Scream’ is theoretically possible, it hinges on the franchise moving away from its current rights holder, Spyglass Media Group. When asked directly about the possibility of her return, she made it clear that it would not occur under the current ownership.
Melissa Barrera tells JustWatch she would only return to the ‘Scream’ franchise if Spyglass doesn’t own the rights:

She clarified that her concerns are not with the films themselves, as she still cherishes the franchise and had a genuinely positive experience filming both ‘Scream’ and ‘Scream VI’ as Samantha Carpenter. Her frustrations stem from how Spyglass’s leadership managed her departure and the negative label she felt was unfairly attached to her, which the company never retracted even after she believed she had been vindicated.
Barrera’s comments reference her removal from ‘Scream 7’ in November 2023, following her social media posts criticizing Israel’s actions amid the Gaza conflict. At that time, Spyglass issued a public statement emphasizing their zero tolerance for antisemitism or any form of hate, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion, or language that crosses into hate speech.
Barrera elaborated further, stating that even a formal apology from the company wouldn’t suffice to bring her back into the fold. She mentioned that she isn’t expecting such changes from Spyglass’s current leadership but remains open to a return if the rights were ever transferred to individuals who would honor the legacy of the franchise’s original director, the late Wes Craven.
Her exit triggered a series of departures, with co-star Jenna Ortega and director Christopher Landon also leaving the project shortly after Barrera’s removal, leading to the film moving forward with a completely different cast and creative direction.

Despite these upheavals, the franchise has continued to perform well at the box office without her. The latest installment reportedly grossed around $214 million worldwide, although some outlets noted it received the lowest reviews in the franchise compared to its predecessors.
An eighth film is reportedly in development at Spyglass and Paramount, although no release date, casting details, or director have been confirmed. Reports suggest that a new writing team has been assigned to the screenplay, while speculation continues regarding potential directors.

While Barrera’s comments do not guarantee a return, her condition would necessitate a significant shift in the control of the franchise’s rights, which currently shows no signs of happening soon. Nevertheless, her willingness to keep the door open indicates that the story isn’t entirely over, even if the timeline for any resolution remains uncertain.
For now, ‘Scream’ fans are left with a familiar horror movie scenario: a beloved character technically still alive, waiting for the right circumstances to align.
