Blockbuster box office records typically fall gradually, chipped away year after year. However, occasionally, a film emerges that rewrites the record books at an unexpected pace.

This is precisely what has occurred since Tom Holland’s Peter Parker returned to theaters this past summer, with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ becoming one of the most dominant theatrical runs in recent memory. What started as a record-setting opening weekend has transformed into a genuine box office phenomenon.

The film has now officially become the first movie in history to surpass $950 million at the domestic box office, marking an unprecedented milestone for North American ticket sales. Remarkably, ‘Brand New Day’ has also become the first movie of the decade to sell over 70 million tickets domestically, a benchmark that few blockbusters come close to achieving anymore.

This domestic haul builds on a series of records the film has been accumulating since its July 31 release, having already surpassed ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ as the highest-grossing movie ever at the North American box office. ‘Brand New Day’ eclipsed the previous record of $936.66 million in just 47 days, a pace that took ‘The Force Awakens’ significantly longer to achieve back in 2015.

The film’s record-setting pace has been consistent from nearly its first day in theaters, starting with an unprecedented $72 million in preview ticket sales before its official release. Rentrak’s Paul Dergarabedian remarked on the astonishing demand, noting that pulling in over $70 million in pre-shows was unprecedented and reflected massive moviegoer enthusiasm during his conversation with CNBC.

That enthusiasm translated directly into the opening weekend, where ‘Brand New Day’ set the record for the biggest domestic debut ever with $360 million, surpassing ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ From there, the film became the fastest to reach $400 million, $500 million, $600 million, $700 million, and $800 million domestically, consistently outpacing the milestones set by ‘The Force Awakens.’

While the film’s box office totals are unprecedented, some analysts have pointed out that raw attendance tells its own compelling story, especially considering today’s higher average ticket prices. Current estimates suggest ‘Brand New Day’ has sold between 73 to 75 million tickets domestically, a remarkably large number for any modern release, even if it still trails older films that benefited from lower ticket costs in the past.

Globally, the film has continued to climb, surpassing $2.4 billion worldwide to become just the third movie in history to top that mark, following ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ This impressive worldwide performance, combined with its historic domestic run, has made ‘Brand New Day’ one of the defining box office stories of the year.

What makes this run particularly remarkable is how long the film has managed to maintain its momentum, continuing to attract audiences nearly two months after its initial release. Few blockbusters manage to hold the top spot at the domestic box office for six consecutive weekends as ‘Brand New Day’ did earlier this fall, let alone keep setting new milestones well into its ninth week in theaters.

With the film now poised to become the first movie ever to cross $950 million domestically, box office watchers are left wondering just how much higher this record-breaking run can realistically climb. Given how consistently ‘Brand New Day’ has defied expectations since its debut, betting against another milestone at this point feels increasingly risky.

Regardless of the final numbers, this Spider-Man installment has already established itself as one of the most commercially successful films ever released. This is a remarkable achievement for a franchise entry many believed had already reached its peak with its predecessor.
