A ‘Game of Thrones’ movie has been in discussions for over a decade. The conversation began in 2013, just two years after the series premiered on HBO, when co-creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss proposed to network executives the idea of concluding the show with three feature films.

Initially, author George R.R. Martin was hesitant. In 2015, he revealed that he had declined previous opportunities because he didn’t want to omit significant parts of his books and was concerned that a film would primarily focus on characters like Jon Snow or Daenerys Targaryen.

Now, fans can finally mark their calendars as Warner Bros. announced on Tuesday that ‘Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest’ will be released in theaters on June 1, 2029, making it the first film spinoff of the franchise.

Owen Harris, who directed three episodes of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’, including the thrilling ‘Trial of Seven’, will helm the film. He has also directed episodes of ‘Black Mirror’ and ‘The Twilight Zone’, and serves as an executive producer on ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’.

The screenplay is penned by Beau Willimon, known for creating ‘House of Cards’ and writing for ‘Andor’, including the acclaimed episode ‘One Way Out’. Willimon has received Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe nominations for his work on ‘The Ides of March’, and he also wrote ‘Mary Queen of Scots’.

Willimon’s involvement was first reported in March by Page Six Hollywood, with Warner Bros. confirming the title and his attachment during its CinemaCon presentation in April. As of now, no cast has been announced, and a production start date has yet to be revealed.

As the title indicates, the film will focus on Aegon I Targaryen, the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and the founder of the Targaryen dynasty. It draws inspiration from George R.R. Martin’s 2018 book ‘Fire & Blood’, which also serves as the source material for ‘House of the Dragon’.

Aegon, along with his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys, conquered six of the seven kingdoms with the aid of three legendary dragons: Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes. Dorne remained independent.

This film will mark the first time Aegon is depicted on screen, as he has not appeared in either of the live-action prequels. Martin has described the project as an epic on par with ‘Dune’.

The release date aligns with HBO’s strategy of delivering at least one ‘Game of Thrones’ project each year. ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’, which received an Outstanding Drama Series nomination at the 2026 Emmys, is set to return for a second season in 2027, while ‘House of the Dragon’ will conclude with its fourth season in 2028.

This paves the way for the film in 2029. ‘House of the Dragon’ released its third season this year, and Warner Bros. has now established a clear timeline for the franchise.

With few major studio releases scheduled for 2029, ‘Aegon’s Conquest’ will be the first film to debut on the first weekend of June. The only other confirmed films for that year are Disney/Pixar’s ‘Coco 2’ on November 21 and Disney/20th’s ‘Avatar 4’ on December 21.

This should provide ample space for the dragons to soar. It also heightens anticipation for a film rooted in a franchise that has garnered 59 Emmys over eight seasons.

The announcement comes as Warner Bros. is set to be acquired by Paramount. Paramount will take on at least 40 Warner Bros. theatrical releases scheduled between October 2 this year and 2029.

When the project was initially reported, Page Six noted uncertainty regarding its production due to the impending sale. Nevertheless, ‘Game of Thrones’ is one of the company’s flagship properties, and Paramount CEO David Ellison has committed to releasing 30 films theatrically each year following the merger.

A separate television adaptation of the Aegon story from writer Mattson Tomlin, which was once in development, is believed to be no longer moving forward.

With a director, writer, and release date confirmed, the next major question is casting. Fans are eager to see who will portray Aegon, Visenya, and Rhaenys, as well as when production will commence.
