‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has emerged as one of the most successful films in history. Since its premiere on July 31, it has amassed approximately $2.49 billion globally, securing its place as the third highest-grossing movie of all time, trailing only ‘Avatar’ at $2.92 billion and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $2.88 billion.

A significant aspect of the film’s allure is its roster of surprise cameos, including Florence Pugh’s portrayal of Yelena Belova. Although Kevin Feige hinted at her appearance beforehand, it still became one of the film’s most discussed moments.

Recently, Pugh shared the backstory behind her cameo during an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’. She credited Tom Holland for her inclusion, referencing a remark he made years ago on the red carpet.

Pugh recounted that the story dates back to after the release of ‘Black Widow’ in 2021, when she was just beginning her journey with Marvel. At that time, she noted that Yelena was not as prominently featured as other superheroes in the franchise.

During a red carpet event for his previous film, Holland was asked whom he would like to work with in the future. Pugh recalled that he mentioned her character, expressing a desire to collaborate with Florence Pugh, who plays Yelena, which excited fans and helped pave the way for her role. She expressed her gratitude towards him for this.

The comment remains relevant. In 2021, at the premiere of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, Holland told ET that a Spider-Man and Black Widow movie would be an exciting twist.

The enthusiasm was mutual. In a 2023 BuzzFeed interview, Pugh expressed that Spider-Man was the hero she would most like Yelena to meet, revealing her long-standing desire to meet Holland.

In the film, Pugh makes a brief appearance in a comedic scene, where she provides Peter Parker with advice and information from her unique office, a Russian bathhouse in New York. She humorously mentioned spending the day in a bath with Holland and noted that she improvised quite a bit during filming.

Her favorite line involves potatoes, allowing Yelena to discuss the New Avengers with Peter as if it were a serious topic. She admitted it was challenging to keep the details under wraps.

Pugh also congratulated Spider-Man on the film’s impressive box office performance, and the host praised her for her cameo.

There may be more of Yelena to come. An extended version of the film is reportedly set to hit theaters, featuring additional scenes, including the anticipated return of Rosario Dawson as Clare Temple. This version may also showcase more interactions between Spider-Man and Yelena.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ was helmed by Destin Daniel Cretton, with a production budget of $225 million. It currently stands as the highest-grossing film of 2026.

Pugh’s appearance on Fallon was also to promote her upcoming Netflix series ‘East of Eden’, which debuts on October 1. She acknowledged that this year has been busy, with ‘Brand New Day’, ‘East of Eden’, ‘Dune: Part Three’, and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ all on her plate.

Pugh has portrayed Yelena since ‘Black Widow’ in 2021, reprising the role in ‘Hawkeye’, 2025’s ‘Thunderbolts’, and now ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. Within the MCU, Yelena is depicted as an assassin and the successor to the Black Widow title.

On December 18, audiences will see more of Pugh as she reprises her role as Yelena in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, and returns as Princess Irulan Corrino in Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three’ on the same day.

For Marvel enthusiasts, this story highlights how fan excitement can influence a franchise. A single casual remark on the red carpet played a crucial role in bringing one of the MCU’s most beloved characters into the year’s biggest film.
