‘Broad Trip’ Star Sophia Bush Reveals She and Ashlyn Harris Secretly Married Last Summer
Sophia Bush and Ashlyn Harris have cultivated a relationship that, while public, has been carefully shielded from the spotlight. The couple began dating in October 2023 following their respective divorces and made their red carpet debut together at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 27, 2024, shortly after Bush’s Glamour cover story.
In that Glamour feature, Bush openly identified as queer and confirmed her relationship with Harris. Harris, a retired soccer goalkeeper and two-time World Cup champion, shares two children, Sloane and Ocean, with her ex-wife Ali Krieger. Bush was previously married to Chad Michael Murray from 2005 to 2006 and later to Grant Hughes.
On September 30, Vogue published an excerpt from Bush’s upcoming memoir, And I Will Tell You Mine: Notes from a Life in Progress, revealing a delightful surprise: Bush and Harris are married, having tied the knot in a private ceremony in upstate New York during the summer of 2025. A post from Pop Crave announcing the news garnered over 339,000 views on X.
The wedding was intentionally understated, taking place in a backyard. Bush’s best friend and producing partner, Nia Batts, officiated the ceremony after getting ordained online. Harris donned a black tuxedo and cowboy hat, while Bush wore a vintage black velvet dress adorned with gold flecks that she discovered in her basement.
Harris’ children were also part of the celebration, joyfully picking flowers from the property. The couple tucked their handwritten vows inside a Mary Oliver book, and the evening concluded with the family roasting marshmallows together. Bush has described the wedding photos as capturing pure joy.
Following the ceremony, the couple chose to keep their marriage private for over a year, opting to inform their loved ones in person. Bush expressed that after years of her life being scrutinized in the media, she wanted the day to be theirs alone.
The decision to go public stemmed from a moment of frustration. Bush shared that she was tired of referring to Harris as her partner during interviews and panels, feeling that the term no longer sufficed since Harris is her wife. This realization was significant for both of them.
Moreover, their choice to share this news was deeply personal. Harris emphasized the importance of visibility, noting that both she and Bush are board members of the Human Rights Campaign and have long supported LGBTQ+ causes.
Bush acknowledged that marriage was a challenging decision for her, being a two-time divorcee. However, she quickly realized that she wanted to marry Harris. In her memoir excerpt, she expressed a willingness to face another divorce, if necessary, rather than miss the opportunity to be married to Harris. She also drew inspiration from the enduring relationship of Harris’ grandparents.
The memoir has been a long-awaited project. Bush revealed to People that her book agent and several editors had been urging her to write a book for a decade, but she declined for nine years. It was only when her life felt aligned that she understood why her story might resonate with others.
The book is set to be released on October 27, making the wedding news just the beginning of its revelations. Fans of the ‘One Tree Hill’ star can anticipate more insights from her journey as she shares her story in her own words. For now, one thing is clear: after three years together, Bush can proudly refer to Harris as her wife in public.
