‘KPop Demon Hunters‘ has rewritten several rules for Netflix. This animated musical, produced by Sony Pictures Animation, follows the K-pop trio Huntr/x as they take on the demonic boy band Saja Boys. It garnered an impressive 325.1 million views within its first 90 days and maintained a spot in the Global Top 10 for 63 consecutive weeks.

One of its biggest surprises came with its theatrical release. A sing-along version premiered in theaters on Aug. 23 and 24, earning an estimated $19 million in just two days at No. 1, with every major circuit participating except AMC. This marked the widest release by the number of theaters for a Netflix film and the first to top the box office in the United States.

The success of the sing-along version is influencing what comes next. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos shared at Bloomberg’s Screentime in Los Angeles on Wednesday that the theatrical release for ‘KPop Demon Hunters 2’ will be extensive, with plans described as big, broad, and global.

Sarandos compared the sequel to other major family titles like ‘Narnia’ and ‘Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory’, which are also set for wide theatrical releases. Netflix is planning 50, 47, and 46-day theatrical windows for ‘Narnia’, ‘Charlie’, and ‘La Bola Negra’, respectively.

The rationale behind this strategy is partly based on audience behavior. Sarandos noted that films that perform well at the box office do not always translate to bigger numbers on Netflix, emphasizing that kids and family movies often see a lot of rewatching. He contrasted these films with art-house titles, placing ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ firmly in the family rewatch category.

Details about the sequel remain sparse. While Netflix has yet to announce a release date, Deadline has indicated that the movie is anticipated in 2029. However, Complex has pointed out that the previously reported 2029 timeline seems unlikely due to the lengthy production process for large animated films, and Netflix has not provided a post-theatrical streaming date either.

What is confirmed is the creative team. Netflix announced on March 12 that a sequel is in the works, with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning as part of an exclusive multiyear writing and directing deal focused on animation. This sequel will be the first project under that agreement, with Sony Pictures Animation once again as a partner.

Fans can also expect greater transparency regarding box office numbers. For the first time, Netflix will report box-office results for these theatrical releases. This marks a shift for a company that previously did not disclose such figures for the original’s sing-along run, leaving estimates between $18 million and $20 million.

This decision aligns with a broader change in Netflix’s approach to films. Sarandos mentioned that the company released over 30 films in theaters last year, some of which continued to show on the big screen after streaming, including ‘Frankenstein’, which had a six-month run. Additionally, ‘The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth’ is set to be the first Netflix movie to receive an IMAX release in November.

However, ScreenRant has cautioned that the announcement regarding ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ does not necessarily indicate a complete shift towards theatrical releases for Netflix. Sarandos himself characterized this model as a way to cater to movie lovers who prefer to watch films in theaters without diminishing their value on the platform. In essence, wide releases will be reserved for titles with a dedicated audience, and few titles boast a fanbase as passionate as this.

The original’s fandom has already demonstrated its willingness to fill theaters, sing loudly, and return for encore performances. A second sing-along run occurred from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 last year, indicating that the audience is eager for a proper theatrical sequel. Whether Netflix can harness that enthusiasm into a genuine box-office success remains the next big question.
