‘Lanterns’ Finale Sneak Peek Features Hal Jordan a Decade Later as Rushville Faces Forgiveness
Few DC projects have faced as much skepticism as HBO’s ‘Lanterns.’ With a rocky live-action history for Green Lantern, the show premiered on Aug. 16 amid social media trolling and review-bombing. However, as the season finale approaches, it has emerged as one of HBO’s biggest DC hits, and the sneak peek of the ‘Lanterns’ finale has fans buzzing.
Created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, the series stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, alongside Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry Kane and Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro. The plot follows the two Green Lanterns stationed in the small town of Rushville, Nebraska, in 2016, before jumping forward a decade to reveal Hal’s death. By this time, he had been stripped of his ring and spent ten years attempting, mostly unsuccessfully, to make amends with the community.
On Oct. 2, HBO Max released a new sneak peek from the season finale, titled ‘Hal ten years later.’ This clip focuses on Sheriff Kane, portrayed by Macdonald, who defends Hal in front of the residents of Rushville. It provides a rare insight into how the town’s divided sentiments played out during his final years.

This scene encapsulates the complex legacy that the series has crafted around Hal. Reports indicate that Kerry’s speech not only defends him but also reflects on her own loss from a decade prior. This moment adds a human dimension to a character that viewers have found challenging to connect with over the course of seven episodes.
The finale, titled ‘Dirt and Stars,’ is set to air on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and will stream simultaneously on HBO Max. International viewers can catch it a day later, with the UK airing it early Monday. The episode is expected to run for approximately 55 minutes.
There are many unanswered questions. Hal was discovered dead in 2026, with suspects ranging from Sinestro to the Macon family, Sheriff Kerry herself, and even the Guardians of the Universe. In episode 7, John and a digital projection of Hal, affectionately dubbed the Hal-O-Gram, ventured through a portal to Antaan, a devastated alien world, where they encountered Sinestro imprisoned in a tower.
This cliffhanger has sparked numerous theories. One popular speculation suggests that John may evolve into the DCU’s first Yellow Lantern, a notion fans link to the finale trailer’s emphasis on Sinestro and fear. Whether any of these theories will materialize will soon be revealed.
The viewership numbers support the excitement. According to Nielsen data, each episode has averaged around 19 million viewers globally across HBO and HBO Max, with 12 million in the U.S. The premiere attracted 9.3 million viewers worldwide, while episode 3 reached 10 million, marking the series’ global peak.
Episode 7 garnered 7 million viewers in the U.S. within its first three days, tying the show’s U.S. series high. HBO has not disclosed a worldwide total for that episode, which some analysts have noted. Nevertheless, the audience appears to be holding steady.
DC Studios co-head James Gunn has confirmed that ‘Dirt and Stars’ serves as a season finale rather than a series conclusion. Although HBO has not officially renewed the show, reports indicate that a writers’ room has reconvened and is brainstorming ideas for a second season. The Ankler has suggested that a renewal is not imminent, leaving fans awaiting official confirmation.

John Stewart’s future is already outlined within the broader DCU. Pierre is anticipated to reprise his role in Gunn’s Superman sequel, ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ which is set to release on July 9, 2027. The timing of this film means the finale must prepare John for his next chapter while also resolving the central mystery of the show.
This situation also complicates the show’s future. With John poised to become a key DCU hero, the creators might opt to reserve him for larger projects. For now, ‘Lanterns’ stands as one of the franchise’s brightest successes, and the finale will determine just how bright its legacy truly shines.
