Few streaming sensations have made an impact like Netflix’s ‘Wednesday.’ Tim Burton’s gothic comedy premiered in November 2022 and quickly became the streamer’s most-watched English-language series ever. Its second season garnered 50 million views within just five days, matching the debut of the first season. Now, speculation about the ‘Wednesday’ ending is circulating on social media.

This buzz is no coincidence. The series has progressed at a notably slow pace, with Season 2 arriving nearly three years after the initial launch. By the time Season 3 debuts, fans could have spent around five real-world years following a show that will have only three seasons.

On September 30, Netflix confirmed that production on Season 3 had officially concluded, sharing a new image of Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams at a typewriter. The streamer’s wrap message humorously referenced the show’s dark themes by stating that production had met its grave. Shortly after, the internet uncovered another clue.

Jenny Ayumi, Ortega’s longtime stunt double, posted a couple of Instagram Stories following the wrap that hinted at her departure from the show. She referred to the moment as the end of an era and the conclusion of a five-year chapter. Soon after, she deleted the first Story, which only intensified speculation.

“End of an era.. 🖤

A 5 year chapter finally comes to a close 🎬🖤”

“A little throwback to where it all began 5 years ago in Romania 🥹🖤”

Netflix has yet to confirm that Season 3 will be the series’ final season, so these posts shouldn’t be interpreted as a cancellation announcement. Ayumi’s comments could simply reflect her personal experience wrapping a lengthy shoot rather than the show’s overall fate. Nevertheless, the deletion and Netflix’s recent trend of announcing final seasons have kept the theory alive.

Production for Season 3 began in February 2026 near Dublin, with additional filming taking place in Paris. Reports indicated that filming was paused at one point for script revisions and that the shoot faced an on-set injury. The upcoming season is expected to consist of eight episodes, although Netflix hasn’t confirmed whether they will be released all at once or in parts.

Ortega mentioned that the season will take place during Wednesday’s senior year at Nevermore Academy, roughly a year after Season 2. She also told Esquire in August that the series is building towards a climax. This setup naturally positions the season as a transitional phase, with graduation looming over the narrative.

Netflix renewed the series for Season 3 in July 2025, even before Season 2 had premiered. Tim Burton is returning as executive producer and will direct parts of the new season. While Netflix has not announced a release date, a premiere in 2027 is widely anticipated.

The cast remains impressive. Returning stars include Ortega, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Emma Myers, and Isaac Ordonez, while newcomers such as Eva Green as Aunt Ophelia, Winona Ryder, Lena Headey, Chris Sarandon, Noah Taylor, Oscar Morgan, and Kennedy Moyer join the ensemble. Joanna Lumley has been elevated to a series regular.

Ophelia is set to be a significant threat. In Season 2, it was revealed that she was alive in Grandmama Hester’s basement, where she was seen writing ‘Wednesday Must Die’ on the wall. Showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have indicated that her return will have major implications for the family.

Even if Season 3 marks the conclusion of Wednesday’s journey at Nevermore, the franchise may not be finished. An Uncle Fester spinoff featuring Fred Armisen is currently in active development at Netflix. Additionally, Wednesday could transition to college or navigate her path into adulthood, expanding the series beyond the school setting.

For now, the most prudent interpretation is that one iteration of ‘Wednesday’ may be approaching its conclusion rather than the entire series. Netflix has not provided any updates regarding Season 4, and fans will likely have to wait until closer to the 2027 premiere for more information.
