Hollywood’s enthusiasm for video game adaptations continues to grow, and one of the most popular military shooter franchises is set to make its way to the big screen. The live-action ‘Battlefield’ movie has been in the spotlight for months, and it seems to have found a likely home.

The project first emerged in the spring, with reports indicating that Christopher McQuarrie would write, direct, and produce an adaptation of EA’s series, while Michael B. Jordan is set to produce and may also star. McQuarrie and his team pitched the concept to various studios and streamers, including Apple and Sony, focusing on a theatrical release, which led to what insiders described as a fierce bidding competition.

On October 2, TheWrap reported exclusively that Sony Pictures has emerged as the frontrunner and is currently in negotiations to secure the ‘Battlefield’ package. The Hollywood Reporter later confirmed this information, although Sony has not commented on the ongoing discussions. Other contenders, including Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon MGM Studios, Universal, and Netflix, also submitted bids, making this one of the year’s most significant bidding wars.

The creative team is already in place. McQuarrie, known for his work on Tom Cruise’s ‘Mission: Impossible’ series, will take on writing, directing, and producing duties, while Jordan, who recently won an Oscar for ‘Sinners,’ is attached to produce and potentially star. Additional producers include Jesse Stern from Electronic Arts, Carter Swan of Emerald Neon, Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo, and Elizabeth Raposo of Outlier Society.

The timing of this project is strategic. ‘Battlefield 6’ was the best-selling game of 2025 in the U.S., selling over 7 million copies within its first three days, marking the largest launch in the franchise’s history. This success contributed to EA’s record quarterly sales, with the October-December quarter reaching $3 billion in net bookings, a 38% increase from the previous year.

This resurgence has revitalized a franchise that has been around since 2002. It has also reignited competition, as Paramount is developing a ‘Call of Duty’ movie with Peter Berg directing and Taylor Sheridan co-writing, slated for a 2028 release. A ‘Battlefield’ film could potentially face off against it at the box office.

For McQuarrie, ‘Battlefield’ represents a new challenge after seemingly concluding Tom Cruise’s role as Ethan Hunt with ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.’ His expertise in large-scale, practical action aligns perfectly with a franchise renowned for its epic warfare. Studios have also recognized the significance of theatrical success following Jordan’s Oscar win for ‘Sinners.’

Jordan has previously shown interest in military action films, having been attached to a live-action ‘Rainbow Six’ movie after his role in ‘Without Remorse,’ though that project appears to have stalled. It remains unconfirmed whether he will take the lead in ‘Battlefield,’ and since the games lack a single protagonist, it’s uncertain which character he might portray.

Details about the plot are being kept tightly under wraps, and the film currently has no release date. Sony has not finalized any deal, so the studio’s frontrunner status will only be confirmed once the paperwork is signed. Previous attempts to adapt ‘Battlefield’ for television at Fox and Paramount fell through, making this the franchise’s most significant move yet.

With a talented director, an Oscar-winning producer, and a successful game backing it, this project appears to be one of the most promising entries in the ongoing video game movie boom.
