‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Presales Overseas Equal ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and Outpace ‘Dune: Part Three’
Marvel enthusiasts have been closely monitoring ticket sales, akin to how others check the weather before a significant trip. The latest update comes from Bulgaria, where presales for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ are attracting attention from box office analysts far beyond the country’s borders.
The timing adds an intriguing layer to the story. With the film still over 10 weeks away from its December 18 release, it will debut on the same day as Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three’, a clash fans have dubbed Dunesday. Every piece of early data from either side is being interpreted as a verdict on who will dominate the holiday box office.
This brings us back to Bulgaria. Box office analyst Simionski shared an update on BOT indicating that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has matched ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ at the same point in the countdown (T-10) and has left ‘Dune: Part Three’ trailing. Reports suggest that ‘Dune’ is still on par with Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ at T-20.
Simionski believes that the current record for the extended opening weekend in Bulgaria, held by ‘Furious 7’ with 102,000 admissions, could be at risk of being broken. If this occurs, he predicts that another film could reach 300,000 admissions this year, based on the calendar’s layout suggesting a multiplier of at least 3x.
He also pointed out the unusual timing of these presales. Typically, major event films begin presales no more than 3 to 4 weeks before release, making the early sales for these two titles stand out nearly 3 months in advance. If this trend continues, he suggests that December 18 could become one of the biggest weekends in Bulgarian box office history, leading into a robust holiday season.
The Bulgarian figures align with a trend that has been developing for weeks. Disney launched general advance sales for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ about 4 months prior to its release, while ‘Brand New Day’ started ticket sales only 45 days out. After just 2 days of presales, TheWrap reported that ‘Doomsday’ was running approximately 65% ahead of the pace set by ‘Brand New Day’ during its initial 2 days.
In the United States, Disney CFO Hugh Johnston announced in September that ‘Doomsday’ had surpassed $50 million in presales three months ahead of its release. More than 70% of these sales were for premium formats branded as Infinity Vision, Disney’s label for premium large-format screens outside of IMAX. Global Box Office has since indicated that the domestic total has exceeded $55 million.
Reports from the UK suggest similar enthusiasm. Fan-site updates indicate that ‘Doomsday’ achieved over $1 million in presales within the first 24 hours, marking the UK’s highest first-day presale total in five years.

The comparison to ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is significant, as that film set a very high standard. It opened to $360 million domestically and $932 million globally, both record-setting figures. To date, it has grossed approximately $2.5 billion worldwide.
In Bulgaria, ‘Brand New Day’ opened to $251,504 across 102 screens and had grossed $1,254,094 as of an October 2 report. Matching that film’s presale pace at this stage is a strong indicator for a market where Marvel’s popularity is already established. However, whether this momentum will continue remains an open question.
These numbers come with some caveats. No major blockbuster has initiated presales this early, so it remains uncertain how much early ticket sales will predict the final outcome. Some analysts have noted that the comparison with ‘Brand New Day’ may be imprecise for this reason, and ‘Dune: Part Three’ benefits from exclusive IMAX access during the holiday season.
The Warner Bros. and Legendary film also shows promising signs. Its IMAX 70mm tickets have been selling out rapidly, even though wide presales were just beginning when those reports emerged. Meanwhile, Disney is focusing on Infinity Vision to guide Marvel fans toward other premium screens.
Nevertheless, a single market showing ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ ahead of ‘Dune: Part Three’ is a data point that fans are eager to share. It also aligns with the broader narrative that the Avengers are back in demand, regardless of the final box office totals. With 10 weeks still remaining, there is ample time for this trend to either solidify or diminish.
