Few comeback seasons carry as much weight as this one. When ‘Ted Lasso’ returned after a three-year break, the Apple TV comedy faced the same question as its titular character: why return at all? The recap and ending explanation for the ‘Ted Lasso’ finale below addresses that, and much more.

Jason Sudeikis had previously stated that the story was crafted as a three-season arc. According to a profile in Hollywood Reporter, he gathered the writers in Ojai, California, in early 2024 and decided to extend the series. The new season premiered on August 5 and aired weekly until October 7, centering on AFC Richmond’s launch of a women’s team.

Ted returned to London after his mother helped him realize that merely being present for his son Henry wasn’t sufficient. Henry needed to see him engaged in something he loved, prompting Ted to take charge of the Lady Greyhounds. Along the way, he supported Alice through her anxiety and learned that belief alone isn’t enough.

As the finale, titled “Being Alive,” approached, the entire Richmond family mourned Mae Green, who passed away shortly after witnessing the women’s team stage a comeback against Bristol City. The episode opens at the Crown & Anchor for her memorial. Niamh and Siobhan lead the attendees in “The Parting Glass,” a traditional farewell song, despite Mae not being Irish.

Upstairs, Ted notices Henry is struggling more than he admits. Henry expresses his wish for Mae to help him with his homework again and inquires about how Ted’s father died. Ted provides a vague answer, but later sits down with Henry to share the truth, though viewers never hear the conversation.

The ownership battle reaches its climax at the shareholders’ meeting. Zelda reveals she was the one secretly acquiring shares throughout the season, through her associate Hugo Riddles. Rebecca had been so focused on Rupert that she overlooked the real threat.

Then comes the twist. Hugo sold the Milk Sisters’ shares back to Rebecca, leaving both women in a deadlock at 49 percent. The crucial 2 percent belonged to Mae, who bequeathed it to Rebecca in her will, granting her 51 percent control of the club. Rebecca forgives Zelda, and they part on unexpectedly good terms.

Roy and Keeley’s storyline is the most heartwarming. Keeley is pregnant, and as Roy cares for her, his agent calls with news that Chelsea has offered him the head coaching position. He also worries about being a good father, prompting the Diamond Dogs to gather, with Ted advising that parenthood is something you can never fully prepare for.

Roy ultimately accepts Chelsea’s offer but insists on completing Richmond’s season first. While packing up his office, he discovers a note from Ted assuring him he will be a great dad, along with one of Ted’s little green Army men. He places the soldier in his jacket pocket and departs with Keeley.

Ted visits Rebecca with biscuits and hints at his desire to discuss her newly vacant manager position. The scene cuts away before she responds, leaving his official role as Richmond’s manager uncertain, but his interest is evident. Meanwhile, Alice has become the manager of the women’s team, with Beard and Ted as her assistants.

Rebecca experiences a significant moment when she proposes to Matthijs, who kneels to complete the proposal. Beard also embarks on a fresh start, shedding his earrings and shaving his head.

Apple has yet to officially announce ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 5. However, the finale leaves numerous threads unresolved, from Ted’s interest in the men’s job to Roy and Keeley’s impending parenthood. Nelson Road also sells out for the Lady Greyhounds’ final match, though the outcome remains unknown.

The closing montage, accompanied by Mae reciting Mary Oliver’s “When Death Comes,” concludes with a note indicating there are 112 days until the start of the next season.
