Fashion has always played a significant role in Panem, and few costumes exemplify this better than the gown associated with Mckenna Grace’s homage to Katniss. This look has been trending online as the franchise prepares for its next installment, showcasing the enduring legacy of the ‘Hunger Games’ wardrobe.

The original dress made its debut in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,’ which was released on November 22, 2013. Designed by President Snow, Katniss wears this wedding gown during her televised interview, and her stylist Cinna creates a stunning transformation into a black feathered dress resembling a mockingjay. This costume became one of the most iconic in the series.

Many fans speculated that the gown was from a major European fashion house. However, costume designer Trish Summerville clarified to The Hollywood Reporter that “Katniss’ white gown is by a designer named Tex Saverio in Jakarta.” She mentioned that she had saved his details for a perfectly fitting project.

On the evening of October 6, Mckenna Grace attended the opening of “Elegance Is Authority: The Story, Style, and Power of Panem” at Musée Rodin in Paris. The 20-year-old actress donned a white, ruffled gown that immediately evoked memories of Katniss’ iconic dress. She had teased the look in a TikTok video on October 5, posing in the gown and taking selfies.

A post from the Film Updates account on X described her as wearing the iconic Katniss wedding dress, with the side-by-side comparison to Jennifer Lawrence’s original look garnering over 962K views, 56K likes, and 5.1K reposts at the time of the screenshot.

However, it’s important to note that Grace’s gown is not an exact replica. According to fashion reports, her dress is an archival piece by Monique Lhuillier that echoes the famous look rather than being the original from the film. It was reportedly customized for the event and has also been described as a replica of Lawrence’s dress.

The original gown was designed by Tex Saverio in collaboration with Summerville, featuring layers of organza and chiffon ruffles, along with a sculptural metal bodice adorned with Swarovski crystals. Grace’s version boasts a full white tulle ball gown skirt with abundant ruffles and a sweeping train. Its fitted corset top features an asymmetric neckline with lavender-silver beaded openwork, a sculptural element rising from one shoulder, and soft feather accents near the waist.

Grace was accompanied by her co-star Joseph Zada, who wore a Tiffany brooch and a suit from ERL. This event marked a glamorous kickoff for the promotional campaign of ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,’ set to hit theaters on November 20. At the Paris event, the duo was seen engaging in conversation while dressed in costumes from the film.

Reports indicate that Grace has promised more fashion statements as the promotional rollout continues. If her gown in Paris is any indication, fans can expect more nods to the franchise’s costume history.

The upcoming film explores the 50th Hunger Games, the one won by Haymitch Abernathy. Zada portrays young Haymitch, while Grace plays Maysilee Donner, a tribute from District 12 and the owner of the Mockingjay pin. Directed by Francis Lawrence, the cast also includes Elle Fanning, Kieran Culkin, Ralph Fiennes, Glenn Close, and Jesse Plemons.

This tribute effectively connects two eras of Panem. Katniss’ dress was a symbol of rebellion disguised as spectacle, and the new film delves into the origins of that same cruelty. Wearing it ahead of the prequel serves as a clever reminder to fans of how long this story has been simmering.
