Few European period dramas have captivated a global audience like ‘The Empress’. This German-language series has transformed Empress Elisabeth of Austria into a streaming sensation, and fans have eagerly awaited the conclusion of her story for two years. The countdown to the final season is now just weeks away.

The show’s impressive track record explains the excitement. Since its debut on Netflix in September 2022, it has emerged as one of the platform’s most-watched German titles, spending 13 weeks in the global top 10 and appearing in the daily top 10 across 91 countries. The first season also secured the International Emmy for Best Drama Series in 2023.

On Wednesday, Netflix finally provided fans with their first substantial glimpse of what lies ahead. The streamer unveiled the official trailer, along with first-look images and key art for the third and final season, which is set to premiere on November 12. A post from the platform teased the moment with the line that her title made her famous, but her determination makes her unforgettable.

The trailer, just under two minutes long, opens with the gates of Schönbrunn Palace swinging open one last time. It portrays Elisabeth torn between duty and desire, receiving a warning that the life she dreams of may never come to fruition. One clip features her at an iron gate, with a crowd of desperate commoners reaching toward her through the bars.

The final season consists of six episodes, arriving nearly two years after the second season premiered in November 2024. This marks the conclusion of a story that Netflix confirmed would end following its renewal.

The narrative picks up after the devastating Sardinian War. Emperor Franz, portrayed by Philip Froissant, returns to Vienna a traumatized man, burdened by the loss of thousands of young soldiers. Elisabeth, played by Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu, struggles to keep their marriage intact while advocating for the empire’s future.

Her efforts largely falter. Franz’s infidelity and growing resistance at court lead to a rapid decline in her health, prompting her to leave Vienna for a distant island to recuperate. During this journey, she encounters Count Andrássy, the leader of the Hungarian revolution, played by newcomer Dejan Bućin.

Their meeting ignites a powerful intellectual and physical attraction, presenting Elisabeth with an impossible choice. She must decide whether to follow her heart without compromise or become the empress her people require. This dilemma appears to be the emotional core of the finale.

The story also extends beyond the Austrian court. Franz’s brother Maximilian, played by Johannes Nussbaum, and his wife Marie, portrayed by Josephine Thiesen, embark on a grand adventure as he prepares to assume the imperial throne in Mexico. Netflix describes the series as traversing Vienna, Hungary, Mexico, and Prussia, showcasing opulent settings throughout.

The new promotional images hint at the season’s tone. The poster features a regal yet somber Elisabeth beside an ornate red and gold throne, draped in a heavy grey coat. Other stills capture a tense candlelit moment between Franz and Elisabeth, Franz standing alone in a foggy field in his military uniform, and Archduchess Sophie presiding over a dining table. Elisabeth is also depicted relaxing under a parasol by the sea and leaping off a rocky cliff into the ocean with a companion.

Katharina Eyssen returns as showrunner, sharing creative responsibilities with executive producer Robert Eyssen. Florian Cossen and Julia Langhof direct, while Sommerhaus Serien produces. Filming took place in Bavaria, the Czech Republic, and Spain.

For fans concerned about what comes after the finale, Netflix is already developing a spiritual successor. A new German historical drama titled ‘Dolly’ has begun filming and is expected to fill the void left by ‘The Empress.’ This is a promising sign, but nothing will truly replace the series’ unique blend of romance, politics, and grand costume drama.

With a trailer now available and the premiere date confirmed, the countdown to Elisabeth’s final dance has officially begun.
