The latest chapter of ‘Chicago P.D.’ kicked off with the Intelligence Unit disbanded, leaving Voight to serve as a patrol sergeant while attempting to reunite the team amid rising crime in the city. This season spanned 21 episodes on NBC, airing from October 1, 2025, to May 13, 2026, and was filled with bombings, blackmail, and a deeply personal mystery.

This recap of ‘Chicago P.D.’ arrives just in time, as the next season premieres today, Wednesday, October 7, at 10:00 PM, following ‘Chicago Med’ and ‘Chicago Fire’. Here’s what you need to recall before Voight and his team step back into action.

The premiere episode, titled “Consequences,” opens with Voight gazing out his window with a cup of coffee, while Platt encourages him to speak with the commander about reinstating the unit. Unfortunately, the meeting didn’t go in his favor, and he was reassigned to Rapid Response, marking a disheartening start for a character typically portrayed as powerful.

As the season progressed, it shifted focus to the squad. The episode “Miami” highlighted Kevin Atwater after a bomb devastated downtown Chicago, killing executives from a prominent real estate firm. This case reunited him with Officer Tasha Fox, an old friend from the police academy.

Dante Torres also received significant attention. In the episode “Send Me,” he was taken hostage and uncovered a shocking conspiracy. Over the years, the writers have delved into his crisis of faith, adding real emotional depth to the rookie.

The fall finale, “Impulse Control,” aired on November 12, 2025. It began with Voight receiving yet another disturbing envelope from the mysterious blackmailer who had been haunting him throughout the season. This storyline loomed over the first half of the year.

The squad investigated the murder of a man found dead in a local park, with Voight and Imani tracing the former gardener of a mysterious businessman named Raymond Bell. The gardener claimed that Raymond had severed several of his fingers over a bag of mulch, a detail that effectively establishes a chilling villain.

Later, Imani received a late-night call from Raymond’s granddaughter, who only breathed heavily on the line, prompting her to break into the Bell mansion in search of the girl. The episode concluded without revealing Imani’s fate, leaving fans to speculate whether the blackmail was retaliation for Voight’s earlier actions.

Episode 20, “The Lost Years,” addressed one of the season’s lingering plotlines: Imani’s missing sister. One reviewer noted that this hour showcased how a single character can elevate a show, highlighting how quickly Arienne Mandi’s character has become integral to the series.

In the finale, “Born or Made,” Imani finally confronts the sister who was taken from her as a child. A critic remarked that it was a bold decision to center the season’s climactic episode around the show’s newest character, which paid off with a powerful performance from Mandi.

The reunion was anything but heartwarming. Shari had been manipulated to protect her abuser, leading her to murder a sex worker and attempt to kill Imani. She subsequently tried to take her own life and ended up hospitalized. Imani’s official report attributed the attack to a man named Kirby.

The episode concludes with Imani questioning Voight about whether Shari will be charged with Laura Kerr’s murder. Voight’s response, conveyed through his signature look, suggests that she already knows the answer. They are left grappling with a difficult decision about whether to conceal the DNA evidence to protect Shari, a moral dilemma that is quintessentially Voight.

In a conversation with TV Insider, showrunner Gwen Sigan and Mandi discussed the finale and hinted at what’s to come in the new season. Their insights suggest emotional repercussions for Imani, as well as broader implications for the team.

A separate interview with TVBrittanyF praised directors Victor Macias and Chad Saxton for their sensitive portrayal of the sisters’ complex relationship.

There is a possibility that the cliffhanger will not be addressed immediately. One reviewer suggested that the new season could begin with a time jump, leaving these events behind. If that occurs, will Voight truly allow Shari to go free, or will Imani have to weigh her loyalty to her sister against the risk to her badge?
